I was running my jets today and the 96 would run around 60 mph at 7000 RPM. Then it would only get up to around 40 MPH at the same RPM. My 97 I bought has done this since I have owned it I am new to the jet ski world and bought both of these for a real good price. I have read that cavitation would cause this and need to replace the waring ring on the 97. Can some one help direct me in the right direction. Also where do I grease the drive shaft I do not see a grease fitting on either ski. Thanks for your help. Russ

Hi & welcome to the forum.

High revs and low speed is the sign of some kind of cavitation.....wear ring, broken impeller, bad sealing of pump against the hull,or bad carbon seal.

the 96 GTX. back of motor, remove the gray cover first (2nd pic) look on the PTO (Back of motor) ........feel for a grease fitting....then crank the motor over a couple times until you see it.......

Most likely it's a worn or damaged wear ring. With a flashlight look through the nozzle, the clearance between the impeller and the wear ring should be no more than .040" about the thickness of a dime.

I was in the same situation this year, i would only go 45 at 7000 rpms.

1) Wear ring was toast, so I replaced that.

2) Then I went to change the pump oil and it was 50% water, so I replaced the bearings in that too. Drain your pump oil, if it has water in it or there isn't any oil, rebuild the bearings. If not just replace the oil.

3) Impeller was badly damaged from the wear ring explosion so I even swapped that out with an SBT rebuilt one.

4) replaced the neoprene seal between the pump and the hull

All said and done I gained 20 mph in my top speed. If you have changed your pump oil recently, just start with the ring and neoprene seal. It's probably just that.

You grease the drive shaft splines when you put the pump back in. The drive shaft then gets inserted into the impeller. I used Mobil 1 sythetic grease from Autozone. That is the easiest part. You do it at the motor too like seadoobuddy said. Google search for seadoo shop manuals and find the one for your machine. Pictures make it nice.

Thanks for all you help greased both and now have water leaking in from the head pipe on the 96. The 97 waring ring I need to replace but the 96 is good. Put them in the water to day and that is when I noticed the leak on the 96 when I pulled it out a lot of water came out and my son told me it did that last time so need to repair whole will epoxy work? Also the pressure regulating assembly is leaking do you rebuild them or by new? I only paid 1600 for both and the dual trailer some I believe I am ahead of the game your thoughts?
