'96 XP: Should I put proks on and rejet or leave stock?

I just picked up a '96 XP for cheap, and I happen to have the perfect jet kit laying around for just open air flame arrestors that I never used on my '97 SPX. I decided to put on a Rossier pipe and ADA heads so I needed bigger jets and so forth. I already have a '97 SPX that is highly modified. So I don't want to do anything really radical with this one and am going to leave the pipe and heads stock. I want this ski to be user friendly and be able to run safely on 87 octane. I am on the fence about whether I want to put on a set of Proks and rejet or just leave it stock. Is there really any performance or gains to be made with just doing this? Any help with advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would still run premium even on the stock xp because they have higher compression than most 2 strokes. Plus I am sure you know but with the pro K's you are more susceptible to water ingestion

The stock airbox is a beautiful thing. It does not restrict performance up to 130HP(I've read) and is great at keeping water out. I love the way you can hose the engine down as long as your fogging hole plug is in.

I would do all the maintenance and leave it stock and running great for now. There will be some bugs to get worked out. After you repair the damage from sitting you tend to find the issue that made them park it in the first place.

IMO the performance gain, if any, won't be noticeable.

IMO the only real advantage of proks is ease of carb tuning, end of story, and generally speaking, you won't have to tune often, usually just a couple of tweaks during initial setup.

i'd personally just say leave it with the stock airbox, and save or sell the proks, they still go for good value, even if used.

Yes to all the above.

1) The aftermarket filters do noting for keeping water out.

2) They don't give you any more performance on their own. (they only suport other mods)

3) The stock air box helps maintain proper "Signal" and tends to run better if there is a small problem. With the aftermarket filters... the tuning needs to be spot-on, or you could cause problems.

That's my story... and I'm sticking to it.

interested to see how my K&N F/A set up is after the rejet. FYI mine came that way and I'm not spending money to try and fix it. Bought the parts, jetted AND rebuilt my carbs already for that setup. Got the setup from Chris at watercraft magic so I know it's the right set up for what I've got.

I got my jet kit from watercraft magic too and I have K&Ns on my '97 SPX. I got it for my '97 SPX, but never used it.
My '97 SPX has k&ns, rejetted stock carbs, ada 43cc heads, Rossier black pipe w/ ecwi water injection kit, ecwi rev limiter, hardjetted waterbox, 85/88 nozzle with xo prop, worx grate, BH sponsons, and 3 degree R&D trim wings.
I see you are from Holly Springs. I have a lakehouse at Pea Hill Creek in Lake Gaston. I am just over on the VA side under the bridge past the pump station. I am literally right across the water from the Club.

I have a buddy who has a lake house on Lake Gaston. Took my Yamaha up there last year. Hope to get the XP up there when I get it running. He has a 95XP 800 that's fully restored as well. You may have ridden with him at some point.
