96 XP Seadoo Troubles

I bought myself & Girlfriend a Matching pair of the 96 XP's and I finally got hers running like a Champ! Now, Mine went Crazy at the Lake over the Long Week-End! It Starts fine and Idles Fine and runs fine, Some Times, Then, I would try to give it gas, all it would do would Bog Down and I noticed when I would hit the VTS trim button up ~N~ Down, it would try to take off... After a couple of few minutes of doing this, it would run great for 5-10 minutes only to start doing the same thing all over again!!! I unhooked the VTS and it never would run right so, I plugged it back up and, I would have to Hit the buttons up ~N~ Down all over again to get it to take off.... Anyone ever experience anything like this? Like to drove me nuts! Any help would be appreciated...... Thanks...

Do you still have gray fuel lines?


If you do... replace them, and clean the carbs, fuel select valve, and the filter.

DO NOT CONTINUE TO RUN IT! A 2-stroke engine is lubed by a small amount of oil... and it's transported into the engine via the fuel. If it's bogging... you aren't getting oil into the engine, and you can seize it.

I pre-mix my Oil at 40-1 Ratio Using the Bombardier Synthetic.... That's why I'm thinking something is shorting out cuz when I push the Trim Button a few times it seems to straighten up for a few minutes only to do the same thing all over again....... It's really weird..... Thanks for your input though.....

check all your grounds. I think we all know water and electrical dont exactly get along lol. Pull the cover off the VTS box and see if its filled with water. Seems to be a pretty common issue with those. Hope i shoot ya in the right direction and good luck!

I took the VTS box apart last Night and to my surprise, it was pretty much Dry! Just had a very little Moisture in the bottom but not even a puddle....
I'm thinking I may have a short in the VTS Switch cuz when I took the VTS box apart, I was thinking water was going to come running out but, the Unit looked nice ~N~ Dry....... Thanks for the input! :bigear:

I realize this is an older post but I have this same problem and about drove me crazy. So I thought I would let ya know what I found. 96 xp would crank & rev good for first few seconds then would bogg & sound like it was hitting rev limiter. You could hit the VTS up or down & would rev making me think something in the VTS was shorted. Long story short I had high voltage. By making the trim motor run and pull the voltage down a little would make it clear up briefly. Hoping new rectifier/regulator will fix it.

Very good troubleshooting...I was reading this thinking how the heck would the VTS screw with it...it has to be the carbs. Well I think you make a very valid point.

You can easily test a rectifier by putting a volt meter on the battery and reving it up...if you see the voltage jump to 15-16 volts, you need a rectifier.
