96 XP just dumped all of it's oil into the hull...

It has been running well. Put it up for the hurricane and just got a chance to pull it back out, and all (most) of the oil is in the hull from the oil reservoir.

I had the seat off in the storage garage with a battery charger on it so we could use it last weekend, so I assumed a rat chewed a hole in one of the hoses, but I don't see any chewed spots.

What are common sources for oil leaks?

The only thing I can see that might be the problem is the rubber grommet in the bottom where the oil line comes out. It seems to spin fairly easily, but the hose connected to it doesn't seem to be excessively oily.

Any suggestions on COMMON places to start looking?

If you see mouse teeth marks that might be a spot to look... Ususally the seams are the first place to split and leak. It could be the grommet also that just drips slowly. I suggest you clean up the oil and place paper towels around where it looks like it might be leaking and check it over night.

The seams in the tank are my next culprit. I expected to see VERY greasy tubes coming out, but was not lucky enough to find those.

The paper towel idea is a good one...

I use them all the time...plus it helps with clean up...news papers work too, but don't absorb as much.

We have a very short off-season here. About 2 weeks last year, 2nd week of christmas break, then a warm week, then another cold week, and then warmed back up again.

I have a boat with a new motor and new impeller that KICKS A$$$!!! I never ride the XP anymore and pretty much gave it to my dad. I get it back when it is broken...let me see...when will I feel like working on it...:reddevil:

Well, I finally got a day off where the weather was decent and I had free time to track down this leak. Pulled the engine most of the way out, and all fittings were dry. Only a half quart of oil in the reservoir, so I put it to the side, dried it all off, and started working at reaching and replacing the ends of the hoses where they go into the block. About an hour later, I see this...and notice how little oil pressure is on it. Just that 2-3 inch bit in the hose is causing this little bit of leak. That is why with a full tank, it was dumping it all in a week.

Glad I found it too, but in the process, I had to take off the exhaust, lift up the engine, break a couple of bolts, etc. It just goes to show how much corrosion this old XP has, and has me thinking about starting to save up for a new SBT rebuild...

I could almost not justify doing all this work, thinking that anytime now, this engine is going to crater on me.
