Just put motor back in boat after replacing bad oil seal, it fired right up but when at about half trottle it started making a noise kind of a banging noise. The engine idles fine and runs strong at full trottle, but that noise makes me nervous. Anybody know what this could be? Any info would be great, thanks!

No shims

Hi Timmyboy76,
No, when I took the motor out I didnt see any shims, and the motor didnt make that noise before. Today, for fear that the motor might be bad I took a good motor out of my other boat and installed it, and the same noise again? I felt better knowing my motor was'nt shot but I'm still lost. I will get some shims and see if that helps. These shims, are they a special kind of shim I have to order or can I use something like a plastic washer?

sounds strange, not hav'n any shims. My sportster, same yr/boat..etc, had 1 on each mount, top of rubber, under the cradle.

Loosen up the motor mount bolts (4) not much, but enuf for some play, then crank motor over, a few times, this will help it "seet" into place. Hopefully thats all it needs.

Motor shims

Today, I loosened the motor mount mounting bolts and cranked it over a few times and the noise is less than before but still there. I will get some shims and try that. I think I'm headed in the right direction thanks a bunch!

Running to lean maybe?

I greased the zurt fitting and still have that noise. Could it be the motor running to lean? and if so how do I check for this. I bled the oil pump to make sure its getting oil and that checked ok good. Where do I adjust the oil mixture?

You might need a mirror, where the cable is going to the pump, you should see a small mark on the cable "disk"...where the cable attaches to, it aligns to a small mark on the pump. It should be in sync with the carbs cable movment.
I hope thats the problem.
