96 spi carb removal/bogging

I have 96 spi with 587. I have manual(from here) that says remove rotary valve cover as part of carb removal. I can't see why this would be required. I see two studs at base of carb with nuts and believe that would be how carb is held on, but I can't see how to get a wrench on the front one. Do I need to take the card apart to remove it? I just want it off to clean as part of the grey fuel line repair.

The boat runs great but after 20 minutes or so it bogs down and won't go past idle speed for a few mninutes, then it catches and goes fine for another 20 minutes. I don't understand why this intermittant problem, if it was junk from the grey lines why would it run good some times. Boat ran fine last year.

you see the nuts, hold'n carb to manifold, but you cant understand why, you need to remove the manifold? Thats because, theres NO ROOM for a wrench to get in there, to remove the nuts, unless you remove the manifold, with carb/s attach to it. Then remove the nuts, to pop the carbs off.

ok thanks, but it doesn't mention the intake manifold, it mentions rotary valve cover. i guess i was looking for trick or tip to just get the carb off without doing something that might screw up the timing or required cutting hole in the hull.

Any idea about intermittant nature of the bog problem? i have checked and there is no water in the boat, everythign inside looks dry/fine/connected.

you get to ur carbs, and i'll put $ on it, that ur "bog" will disappear.

To remove the manifold/rv cover, there's 4-13mm bolts, the 3-bolts are cake to get to, but the 4th one, on mag side, is a killer. Once bolts removed, make sure you dont go pull'n just yet, because you have the RV behind it, that will stick to cover, then you'll need to reset the timing, so pull SLOOOOOWLY, to expose the RV, then push it back, to keep it on the gear.

Like was just said the bottom front bolt is a bitch!!!! I use a 1/4 inch drive socket to get it off.. It's kinda behind the oil injector pump.. I have converted all my machines to premix.. It makes it a lot easier to get that bolt out with the pump gone!!!

Thanks. I was able to get that front bolt with stubby wrench. The filter in carb was about 60% blocked with gunge and fluff, the rest of the carbuerator looks very clean. Cleaning now with some carb cleaner.

All the lines replaces, carb cleaned and back together. Was out on Lake Erie today to try it. Worked fine for 45 minutes, then same behaviour it bogs down and won't run much over idle speed. After about 5 minutes of this idling it started running well again and I heading to shore. While it is bogged down, it won't run much faster than idle even though I hold the throttel almost wide open to keep it from stalling.

Not sure what to try next - I saw a theread on here about vent lines getting clogged, but my problem is intermittant and I don't think a glog would do that. I will check tomorrow all the vent lines for blockages.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks for those ideas.

The selector switch was clean, I checked it when doing the lines. The boat is running with the selector in the reserve position. since the little plastic selector knob opn the outside broke so I just leave boat running on reserve postion.

I'll try the gas cap idea if the weather co-operates tomorrow.

Wuhoo - I think its fixed. I was out on Lake Erie tonight for a good run of hour or so and no bogging. I'm not sure exactly what fixed it since this last outing applied three changes: took slector switch out of fuel supply, removed the stock fuel filter replacing it with inline filter installed between reserve and engine line, blew out the one way valve on side of hull.

The one way valve on side of hull, which I'm guessing is pressure relief valve, was plugged up so I couldn't blow through it. I blew out some gunge with compressed air and reinstalled it. If this is relief valvle, could too much pressure in tank flood the engine and cause the bogging, although it didn't feel like it was ever flooded?

Thanks again for the troubleshooting ideas and assitance.
