Just bought used 96 Speedster. According to previous owner the one motor was not winterized properly and no longer will run. Is ther freeze plugs? What next, any suggestions, new owner. Help Please!

:agree: New spark plugs, fresh fuel If the battery is fairly new and fully charged get 2 beeps on the DESS lanyard cap and see if it fires up.

For future posts please include you model and year in the avatar. It makes it easier to answer your question with all the info in front of us. and we don't have to search your post for it.

new batteries in. two beeps from lanyard when attached. right side motor turns over no start. will start with spark check any suggestions how? left side motor full of oil, maybe from previous owner in an attempt to winterize. WAY too much oil though. Any suggestions on how to clean out excessive oil in crankcase. Removed head and motor turns over fine not siezed but can hear alot of fluid in crankcase when manually moving pistons. Any suggestions? I thought to put fresh gaskets on head and reinstall then turn over to clean out fluid. Sound ok?

My story.

I bought a 96 speedster- Engines full to the choke plates.
I bought a Mighty Vac (hand operated vacume pump) it came with a cup and
lid for just this type of problem.
I opened the throttle and put the tube down till it was in the crank case.
You may have to rotate the PTO till it clears the rotary valve.
I think I emptied the cup about a dozen times but it cleared the oil out.
You might be able to use one of those Oil change pumps for a Boat.
I've seen them listed on E-Bay and in Boat supply catalogs.
Good luck!

I will try this and put new top end o rings and reassemble. Right side motor fired up last night. Ran it for about 10 seconds. That was a great sign. Thanks for the help. Hope to be in water this weekend.

I never winterize my 96 speedster and have had no issues. Once we thought the lake was going to flood so we put in the drain plugs and tied the trailer to a tree. The lake never flooded, when we came back it wouldn't turn over because the engines were full of water we emptied the out by turning over the engines without spark plugs in them. After that it worked fine like nothing had happened. These engines are very resilient.

If it's full of oil, remove plugs and crank away. Crank seal may be leaking and may require a rebuild. You can try running it like it is depending how bad it leaks. Old rotary valve engines tend to leak oil from the RV oil bath chamber into the crank case.

oil in crankcase/intake

Left side motor - Pumped 500 ml from crankcase thru intake with mityvac. Attached pics of oil for color reference, looks dark as it may have heated up. Any thoughts? I beleive the oil is coming from RV seal leak, read elsewhere in another post that this is common problem. Will shutting off oil line to RV's while not in use prevent this? I am told that Bombardier motors on sleds have a shutoff valve for this oil line while not in use. Will oil leaking from this seal burn off while motor is running? Right motor fired up the other day, Left side motor back together and fired right up!!!!!! Pleased to hear that!! Any test I should perform before launching into lake? Great help and many thanks to all who have responded to this thread, awesome!!!!!!!!. speedsterdad

test before lake????

Both motors running!!!! Any tests I should do onland before putting in lake??? Thank you in advance.

go runn'er...You can pinch the line, that feeds the rv assy, make sure though, you unpinch before use, or install ball valve, closest to case, so the gravity of oil in line is less, on the seal. Good luck.

Thanks timmyboy. should i run with water supply on hose? what rpm should it hit not in water, seems to bog a bit at wot. Might need to run for awhile to clean it out, smoked alot when first started. Thoughts?

yeah, but b-4 that, spray some wd-40/water on carbon seals, it'll heat up while not in water.

Bring some plugs...3k out of water, 1500 in water. Other than that chief, run it, and if prob still there, not sure if you went thru carbs yet, but if bogs there, go thru carbs and/or while at lake, disconnect the red wire from rectifier, see if that clears it out, but make sure you plug in, since that charges the battery...

remove the 2-grey shields, and the seals are under there, riding against a metal washer.

The rectifier, will be, if like my sportster, mounted on "firewall" in engine bay. Looks like a 1in.X1in yellow square. Disconnect the red wire on each, but one at time, to isolate the problem..

both running well

In driveway with hose both motors running at 3000 rpm, left side tach jumping a bit maybe a short, will check that. doing plug check. motors do not rev up beyond 3500 though, ok? found a few water leaks and bilge pump is not running, will check that for short. checking oil in pump and grease pto zerk. she will be in water this weekend. Its hockeytime, GO WINGS!!!!!!!!

when rev'n it up, put lever in "F" position, then it'll rev up. Its the "nuetral safety switch" kick'n in. Cool to hear you got it goin...

high rpm adjustment

Still testing on land with hose hookup. Starboard motor running strong thru rpm range. Port motor has a sluggish spot at high rpm. Can this be a carb adjustment? Manual says high speed mixture screw has 1/4 turn adjustment then says dont adjust. What gives, can it be adjusted or not? Any otheer suggestions? Replaced plugs, same issue. I was thinking some Lucas fuel treatment with about a 1/4 tank of premuim added to tank to top it off and see whaty happens. Have had great luck with Lucas in other motors. What do you think?

without a load on the engines... it's too hard to judge flat spots. Before you try to adjust the high needle... it should be put in the water... and a fresh set of spark plugs installed.

Yes, it has a high and low screw like most pressure carbs, but SeaDoo specs out the internal jets to the right size. Actually… your high needle is closed, so you can only open it… adding more fuel. But, there is a plastic cap on it, so you can only turn it a ¼ turn.

But like I said…. It needs to be put in the water (To load the engines) to tune it.

Fouled spark plug renew

Is there a method to clean a fouled plug? Going thru a few brand new plugs getting motor running and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Fouled plug cleaner.

Thanks. I remember a small 12v tool that you could put a plug in and it would sandblast it in a little chamber that the plug screwed in to. It would clean plugs good as new. Anyone heard of one of these?

WOT sluggish

Ran boat in lake yesterday and it ran well. Starboard motor ran smooth through rpm range. Port motor was losing rpm from 7000 to 6000, up and down also fouled a set of plugs in port motor. Boat seemed to cavitate bad trying to get on plane. Had to feather throttles slowly to get it to plane out. Any ideas?

Finally running great

Cleaned fuel filters on firewall for both motors and cleaned carbs thoroughly. Also the rotary valve case on the starboard motor had significant wear causing major blow by and the surging at idle. The fuel switch also had vacuum leak causing air to leach into gas line contributing to inconsistent idle and carb operation. Mike and Jeremy at Jetcrafts in New Baltimore were a great help in diagnosing thesse issues, Thanks a million for the help!!! Cant wait til nice weather again to go out, may drag it south and find some nice weather, dont think I can wait six months for nice weather here in Michigan!!
