96 speedster alarm

I just got a 96 speedster, the owner told me its been sittng in a garage for 5 yrs. Got it home, rebuilt the carbs. One motor runs great, the other boggs, both motors are at 142 to 146 compression. Went to lake to try it in water and now there is an alarm sounding, and the bastard of the 2 still wont run. The bad one will run out of water, but can hardly get it to stay running in the water. I am a jet boat virgin, and right at this point in time, I wish i still was.
 
Check that the plugs are NGK BR8ES. They have to be resistor type plugs, that is what the R in the number means.

Does the bad engine run well on a waterhose?

What do the current plugs look like?

Don't get discouraged, you'll figure it out.
 
Those are the plugs I have. It run on the hose, but doesnt come up as quick as the other engine, as soon as its in water it will barely start. The plugs are wet. I read the posts on the grey fuel lines so I checked, and mine are black. As far as the alarm I'm getting, I was running it at the lake on the good engine when it came on, it is constant, I think its an overheat alarm. I did order the repair manual for it.
 
Hello: I'm wondering on it stored for so long or was it stored properly. If it was stored in a barn check for mice in the exhaust, yes that's right it does happen up here in Canada anyways. Also check your fuel filters and see what kind of crud is in there. Check for water in there as well. I would drain all fuel blow out all your lines, clean your carbs, clean your rave valves. Then run it up on the hose and make sure both engines are running at about 3100 RPMs out of the water. Take for a lake or river test and see what it will do. If it bogs try pulling the choke and see if it picks up, this will tell you if it is a fuel problem or not. Let me know on your trials and we will see if we can get to the bottom of this ok!

I bet it's a fuel issue....

So try starting fluid while on the water. Does it fire up? If so, The carbs are still gummed up. there are MANY passages in there. I have yet to rebuild one with 100% success.
 
I'm not a fan of starting fluid on a 2 stroke, scored pistons on a snowmobile that way. The carbs were cleaned in a ultra sonic bath of carb cleaner for 4hrs per carb, fully disassembled. I do still agree that the crud could still be there. I did drain and clean the fuel cell, but did not replace any fuel lines yet.
 
You can try pouring premixed gas on the carb directly if you are concerned with the possible starting fluid ill effects. If it's a fuel delivery problem it will run on the pured fuel no problem.
 
Is it possible that after sitting for so long with maybe gas in the fuel lines that crud formed in the black lines?
Just a thought.
 
I also thought that, but why only one of the engines?? I think I'm leaning towards tearing down those 2 carbs again, and replacing all the fuel lines. I'm still confused by the constant alarm on the good running engine, its got to be cooling right?? Stupid question, what does MPEM mean???
 
MPEM - Multi Purpose (electrical Module) I'm not sure about the last 2 words.

Thanks for the MPEM answer, I just got the CD/repair manual yesterday, couldnt find what it meant in there. I've been to the lake twice with it, and the engine that runs well is setting off a constant alarm, I think its an over heat alarm. When I hook it up on the hose, it doesnt seem to flow the same amount of water as the other engine, I think there is a restriction somewhere. We are in the middle of a back seat toduck, archery/deer, and fall turkey hunting right now, so the boat has taken a back seat to all of the above. We wanted to use this for a duck boat this year, but thats not happening.
