96 GTX randomly shut down after running great (HELP)

I just bought a 1996 GTX with 64 hours on it. I did some maintenance on it(plugs, cleaned fuel filter, and some fresh gas). I took it out ans it ran great, no problems at all. On the way back in I have about 10 minutes of 6mph zone to get to my house. About 3 minutes into the 6mph zone the ski just shut off like you were to turn it off. I tried to re-start it but it just turned over. I got towed in and tried it again at the peir and got the same result......just turned over but would not start. Has anyone had this problem? Where should I start. Any help is appreciated .

Did you try changing the plugs? I would try to get it started tonight if you had it towed, Just to be sure you didn't get any water ingestion from towing.

What Rotor13B is saying is if you tow these things much past 10-15 MPH you can force water to circulate through the cooling system and exhaust. This is bad when the engine is not running to force the water out of the exhaust as it comes in to cool it because it instead can flow the wrong way back into the crankcase and flood your engine and ruin the bottom end.

Thanks for the explanation. I was only towed about 500 yards at about 3 to 4 mph. I am going to try to put more fuel in it tomorrow(only has two bars on the digital gauge) to see if it will fire up. I am going to pull it tomorrow if it still will not start and go through it. Anything that I should look at that would just cause it to just turn off then not start. It cranks/turns over but just wont fire.

tune-up

need to pull the carbs and fuel selector switch and clean them out, also need to replace the grey fuel line and install regular black fuel lines from auto store. Also nows a good time to pull the raves (valves under black caps) and clean the carbon off them.

Sounds like a good plan, filler up with some fresh gas. I am not sure off hand what would cause it (perhaps one of the other experienced folks will chime in too) but if I was in your shoes, I would just start with the basic troubleshooting. Pull each plug one at a time and crank it over with the plug connected to the wire and touching the side of the engine or exhaust (wherever you can get ground) and make sure your getting spark. If you are, it's most likely a fuel problem. You can confirm this by squirting a bit of fuel down the plug holes and putting the plugs back in to see if it fires up just long enough to burn that off. Otherwise, if no spark, open up and check connections in electrical box next to the battery and test the coil by verifying that 12v is getting to it when cranking. And so on. Hope that gives you a little starting point anyway.

Well here is an update.

I checked and the the ski has spark. Pulled the plugs and they both sparked on the manifold.

I checked and it is getting fuel. I even poured a little fuel in the cylinders to be sure that was not the problem.

I checked compression and got 150 on the front cylinder ans 125 on the rear cylinder.
.............................

The ski turns over and sounds like it wants to start and sputters for about 1-2 seconds but wont actually fire and run. Does anyone else have any other ideas? I am trying to avoid a trip to the seadoo dealer. Thanks in advance.

125 is kinda low, and more of a difference than it should ideally have compared to the front cylinder. Sounds like you might have a bad ring or something in he rear cylinder. You can also pour a bit of oil down the bad cylinder to coat the piston and cylinder walls, then retest compression. If it goes up considerably, the rings are most likely the issue. I still am not sure why that would be the cause of it to quit running totally, I would have guessed it would just run sluggish. How was it running before all this? Also, how are your plugs after trying to start? You said it is getting fuel so you might wanna make sure it's not flooded and coating the plugs and causing them not to spark.

I would also check your oil injection to make sure it's not clogged on the low cylinder. A fresh set a plugs are cheap and would also eliminate that cause as the reason of no start. Idling along for awhile or slightly being on the throttle for steering control through the no wake zone can cause the plugs to load up and foul.
