96 gti carbs

I have a 96 gti that has the dual carb setup. I was wondering if it is possible to convert it to the single carb. I know it physically will fit, but what about fuel feed, timing, and other things. The reason I ask it that is what I did, the original 2 carb manifold broke, so I had a extra 96 gts with the single carb. It would idle fine and run to about 20/25 before it would bog down, and I am being told that the single carb will not work.

The 96 GTS had a 587 motor in it as I recall… and you are bolting that carb on a 720 engine… Right??? OK… will it work… sure… will it work well… no.

First things first… you will need to try to set that carb up to the specs of the 720 engine. I would start with running the pop-off pressure up to 40-56 psi. That will help fead the idle and mid. Then, adjust the main jet until you find what will work.

Actually… scratch that idea… the 97 SP had a single SBN 38 and it was a 720 engine. The specs on that carb are:

Main 135
Pilot 57.5
Needle 2.0
Pop-off 21-37
Spring 115g
Low 1-3/4
High 0

If you set it to those specs… it should run… and adjusting the needles should get you the rest of the way.

Good luck

ok that makes sense. I did not realize the gts had a 587 motor. I only bought it for body parts,($100) the engine was bad, but the carb and manifold looked alright, so I figure why not try them. I only paid 400 for the gti, with a trailer, so I don't have much invested in this so far. Just kinda trying to piece one together.
