96 gsx bad mpem?

First time poster. I’ve enjoyed my other ski’s so much I got a third one. Been sitting for years but had good compression and was cheap. But I put the key on get two lights then nothing. Press start button and heard a click in the front box, but nothing getting to the starter relay in the back. New battery,New to me ski, new problems, been checking connections for hrs, beeper hasn’t worked in yrs, grounds check good tried a new ground, DESS post tests good with the meter but is the mpem reading it? Fun times!

I bought this same ski a couple years ago, quite possible the MPEM is bad, mine was, upon almost completing the build when testing the electrical in ski I could never get the 2 beeps and 12 volts to the solenoid. DESS post was good, and Nick at Westsidepowersports insisted I try a another DESS post, it was still a no go. So...it was another $200 for a good MPEM and I was ready to get it running. After that and installing the engine, it was good to go.

Those beepers typically go out, both skis I've had to replace them. You need a good beeper of course to figure out what the heck is going on. You'll be able to get it into advanced diagnostics mode and so forth. Also, the 24 yr old lanyard key is likely crap, they loose resistance over time and become unreliable. Since you have a few skis, may be a good time to get a Candoo Pro programmer... I have one and glad I do, no need to get someone to program a lanyard, and there's other things it's useful for.

What started out as a total crappy ski when I got it, needing absolutely everything, turned out to be a nice ski, I've put over 40 hrs on it since the build, and I'm 2nd season with. I really put it through ringer today actually, such a fun ski to have. You'll love that ski once you get it on the water.

My GTI will start with any key so I’m assuming it’s got an aftermarket mpem? Is that a reasonable option for the GSX. Knock on Wood, I’ve had good luck with it and it was in it when I purchased it second hand.

1996 was the first year for the DESS key system, and I don't think all the skis in that yr had it, only the GTX, GSX and XP to my knowledge. Yeah, my ski had a couple old lanyard keys laying in it, but it didn't matter since I had a bad MPEM. I purchased a new Atlantis key and programmed it to the good MPEM once I got one. Nick had programmed one of the old ones to it, just to assure me it would work when I go it back from him.

You could send what you have to him, grey box with the MPEM and lanyard and he'll test it out and program a new key for it. He has a quick turn around and reasonable charges for any items you may need.
