To start it off I have a 1996 GSX 787. I just rebuilt the motor and want alittle more power out of it once its fully broke in. Right now its got pod flame arrestors and a stock gutted waterbox. I just bought a R&D rec head (175) and a baffled TDR waterbox. I've got the chance to buy a Factory Spec II pipe but Im hearing bad reviews about burning pistons up. I'm not racing just a rec rider that wants more power. So are they piston eaters like they say they are? Also what else would I need to buy for it. Keep hearing something about a micro touch?

You want more power, buy a 951 GSX. Preferably a 99 Model :)

actually I disagree with CR just a bit, bumping up to a 98/99 951 model isn't necessary. I think a pipe/head would perk that puppy up quite a bit. I always liked that blue gsx, handled quite well, pretty nimble and had some pop to it even as a stocker, with the above mod's you should definitely notice a difference.

I do think that an impeller swap should be part of the process as well.

I'll defer the preferences between spec/ross to others more experienced in those matters, I have only run the spec 1 personally, and had no complaints. I think that most tuners prefer the Ross from casual reading, but i'm prepared to get corrected on that :)

I would put a stock waterbox back on. They actually flow very well and keep the noise level down. All the TDR ones do is make it louder and give us a bad rep to non-boaters.

I mostly ride on a private lake so noise level isn't a problem plus I kinda like a little extra noise. I am running a solas 17/22 and a scoop grate on it. SO what your saying is i shouldn't worry about frying a piston as long as the carb is jetted correctly?
And as for getting a newer GSX, I'm getting out of 2 strokes except for a X4 and my first ski (GSX).

The Rossier is more forgiving when it comes to burning pistons. The Rossier can be run with re-jetted stock carbs but responds well to aftermarket carbs. The Spec 2 really needs aftermarket carbs to feed it to be reliable. Both pipes work well with a water injection system(accelerates better through the lower rpms) but can be run without it. You can get everything possible from the Rossier and still run premium pump fuel. You have to de-tune the Spec 2 a little for pump gas though by staying on the rich side of carb(fuel) and pipe(water) jetting.

Micro Touch made rev limiters and water controllers. Some are a combined unit like the ones that came with the Spec 2 kit. You will need a rev limiter to rev above 7050 rpm. Both pipes have the potential to rev 7400ish(more for the Spec 2) .

curious, when adding the ross or spec, are FA's necessary ?

I know I did FA's on my x4 when I went spec1 but not sure if I had to or just wanted to for convenience of carb tuning.

Yes you need to be able to get to those needles. A good tach and some needle turning is always necessary after bolting aftermarket stuff up.

ya, I used prox with covers. I think the package ran about $120ish new, but i've seen them used for less.

oops :) sorry

proK.

anyway, I had to purchase, the FA/Adapter/outerwears.

It certainly made access the the carb screws so easy, you could beach it and adjust, go right back out.

Yea keep your 96 gsx the 98 and 99s were an abomination for seadoo they are a maintenance nightmare . I think it was first year they switched to fuel injection . And they had all kinds of problems

Nope, 97-1/2 to 99 GSX Limiteds were carb 951.

The 99-2001 GSX RFI was the injected 787.
