95 sportster engine done??

hey guys,


i just bought a seadoo boat and one of the motors isnt running...i got the boat cheap.. its got twin 657 rotax's. i just took it to a marine mechanic and he said compression was good but he found shavings in the carbs and motor needs a rebuild. the thing cranked over and almost fired it seemed like it wasnt getting fuel.

i am new to these, the first mechanic i took it to put some mix in the intake and it fired he didnt have time this week for me tho.


does it sound like i may be getting hosed?

There is so much that can be wrong. What type of shavings in the carb? Did you see them? What do the spark plugs look like?

What color are the fuel lines? If they are grey that could be one of your problems. You will need to replace all the fuel lines and clean or rebuild the carbs on both engines.

So... Shavings in the carbs???? Where would they come from???

Sounds like he wants to sell you an engine.

Does the engine turn over???Do a compression test.Dont trust that mech...Shavings in the carbs hhmmmm...that sounds shady...did he take the carbs apart??? Check out the engine yourself. Its not hard...we can help you!

the fuel lines arent the grey ones. i did a compresson test myself before i brought it there and it held over 150. plugs seemed ok. it turned over fine too just wouldnt fire. im going to have a look tomorrow to see what hes done, im pretty good with mechanics im just new to these and i thought the shavings in the carbs sounded funny too.

im thinking im just gunna take my boat home and try to figure this out myself,, im finding alot of useful info in these forumns.

i will update tomorrow with what i find out. thx guys

I hate shady mechanics. Can't trust most of them at all these days. This forum is great they have helped me out so far. I can wrench on anything but i will take any tips i can.

Mate.Think about it.Shavings in the carbs.What a load of crock.The 1st point of intake into a motor,has metal shavings????The mechanic is a knob jockey.Or a liar.Who the hell shaves crap off to put into a carby.Move on quick.Talk to the DrHonda or any other people on this site.

ok so i showed up today at this place and asked to see my boat they were hesitant to let me in the back but they did and i talked to the mechanic that diagnosed the motor. he told me he found shavings in the carbs and motor and that the botom end is gone. it would be 1600 to fix. so i go over to my boat to find all he has done was take off the intake so the carbs are exposed and the motor hasnt been taken apart. so i said lets see these shavings, he shows me this chunk of wat looked like the bottom of a spark plug and says he found it in my carb, i questioned that the motor hadnt been touched and he said yea i tried new plugs and did a compression test and it tested fine.


long story short... i told him ill be picking up my boat tomorrow since i dont agree with his diagnoisis.

so now when i get it back where should i start??? one motor runs fine. already checked fuel filter and spark.

Spark plug in the carb? That's a new one. Must be a pre heater of some sort on your "experimental Rotax" they put in those Speedsters. By the way.. It's a speedster if it has twin engines, not a Sportster. The engine ran on what was put in it meaning it's a fuel problem. Rebuild the carbs on that engine, new filter and try again. There are threads on rebuilding the carbs on this site. Not a bit deal. Order a kit. Bet the bottom end is fine... unless he "layed hands on it" and felt the damage.... ;-) Enjoy your new boat!

no theres no plug in the carb just a peice of metal that looked like a piece of one that apparently he found in the carb. i will look into carb rebuilds and work from there....hopefully i can get it on the water before the summer is done.

I was joking about the spark plug. The mechanic was trying to rip you off! Doubt that was even in the carb!

ok so i pulled the motor today, it was alot easier than i thought. i pulled off the carbs and decided to check the rotary valve out. sure enough it has damage where the plate spins around. also when u spin the crank shud the rotary valve gear spin too?

Yes the rotary valve and the crank work together to feed fuel at the proper time. There is a brass gear on the rotary shaft that can strip. By the looks of the photos you posted this has happened to your motor. You need to pull the rotary shaft. This is done with a special tool. You can fabricate one with a PVC cap and a bolt. I think you PVC needs to be 1.5 inches. It must fit over the shaft and seal. Drill a hole in the middle and use a bolt that threads into the center of the shaft. Crank down on the bolt and the shaft should pop out. Check to see if the brass gear is damaged. If it is the cases will need to be split to clean any shavings from the crank. Also check the positioning of the gear on the crank. It should be centered but mine was pushed against the seal when the shaft stopped.

ok thanks, iv checked out SBT and found my new rotary shaft. handy making that tool from pvc i almost bought the one from offline. im gonna spit the case to double check anyways...what about the scoring on the block itself in the pic, just file it and it shud be ok still?

so i pulled the bottom off and it seems like that brass gear took more out with it.... the crack bearing beside it is gone also and i cant get the rotary shaft out using the pvc trick its in there good.

im thinking its the whole bottom end that needs replacing
