95 GTX loads up in water

Sounds like Lanier, I know it well. I lived in Atlanta many years ago, earned my degree there.

When I say just to the West, I can see I95 from my dock, since you lived in Atlanta, you may be familiar with Savannah, I just South of there. Tidal Saltwater, can be on the ICW in about an hour by water, we go to the beach on the South end of Ossabaw Island.

I've ridden on Lanier many times. A ton a huge boats and KILLER wake jumping

I haven't been there in ages, barely remember it for some reason( I thought I could remember it but my brain is slipping fast!), which is a shame b/c I used to go once a week for several years. All I really can remember is I used to go to the state park, it was on the western shore!

Good times, yes! But sheesh, the more I try to remember I just hit a wall, my brain is plugged worse than a Mikuni full of ethanol or something......

Hey Midway, I'm thinking about swapping to a hotter plug, these BR8's are a wee bit too cold, I think!

That may be, just in case you have not checked, which you probably have, NGK numbers go down for hotter. That could be why my 96 has to get fully warmed up before it runs good, takes roughly 1,000 feet before it takes off. I will find out when I get through with rechecking the carbs, once I feel they are right then I may play with heat ranges, I have a pair of 8's, a pair of 7's and 1 6. I was getting ready to do just that. Just don't want to get too hot, could melt pistons. I guess that if you get the proper color plug you would then have the proper heat range in your cylinder, hence proper heat range spark plugs.

Yes, the Japanse numbers go down the hotter range. I suspect that Rotax is conservative on plug range under the assumption it helps avoid detonation, but a cool plug requires a leaner mixture due to potential for fouling (and lean leads to detonation).

It's running really good right now though, so I'm not motivated to make carb changes. This past spring I lowered the pop from 25psi factory to 21psi and also went from a #75 pilot two sizes up to the #80. The first 951 engines were using this #80 pilot, but those blew 150psi compression and the later ones blow a bit less, mine's blowing 137. I needed more fuel in mid range though, which is why I went to #80 pilots, but probably don't need as much as the higher compression 951. Thus also considering #77.5 pilot but first will throw BR7's in.

I wish I knew what the earlier 951 weaknesses were, if top or bottom end. If bottom end, could've just been too much fuel but they changed lots of things so it's difficult to know for sure.

Well according to UPS Tracking I should have parts by end of day on Friday, hope to get the ski I have the carbs off of up and running and give them both a water test, with my luck the tides will be wrong on the little creek I am on. Just checked the tides on Boat US, looks like midday high tide, which is good, can get a couple hours in.

I got the springs on the Friday mentioned in my last post, got the Pilot Jet on Tuesday, had pop off pressure set, installed Jet, finished carb assembly, started to install back to engine, found that the cable guide for the oil pump cable was missing, could not find it, ordered one, got it Thursday, could not work any then, installed last night, synchronized all linkages, went out this morning and finished up, starts and runs great on trailer, hope the weather will cooperate this afternoon so we can water test.

some inspiration for you:

No real water test, backed trailer out back gate into water, started, idled good, hit throttle, pushed ski up on trailer, after warm up idle was a little low, other than that all seemed good there. Stepped over on mine, dang battery dead, I thought about checking earlier today and did not, my bad. Maybe tomorrow, would not have had much time, thunderstorm came up.

Strizzo, Told my wife about my post and showed her your reply/video, she laughed and called you a SA. :D By the way, we would do the same for you. Looked like you had a good ride there. Was the camera mounted on the ski, looked like it was below water a couple times.

so you didn't take it out since the rescue ski was down?

i didn't post the video to rub in your issues, i bought my 95 non-running and went through the fuel system, sent the carbs to Dr. Honda, and replaced the completely missing oil injection lines (they had dry-rotted off) before starting it for the first time in 5 years or so. as long as you have the carbs sorted and good compression, yours shouldn't give you any trouble. ours has been reliable as an anvil since then.

the camera is a gopro hero2 on a surf mount on the flat-ish area just to the left of the hood. i have two gopros and wifi backpacks for them so i can control them from the wristband. i have a couple suction mounts that let me put them just about anywhere and stick on mounts in various places on the XP and GTX that makes setting them up fairly easy. i'll post some vids once i get them edited and uploaded

Yes, no water test without rescue ski.

No rub in felt here, everything is good. I bought mine running, 95 and 96 GTX, got a couple good rides, then 95 would not start, no fuel, cleaned and built carbs, did not check pop of pressure, 95 did not run right, pulled carbs, bought a pump to check with, l found stupid settings, anyway long story short, got things set right, will get a water test maybe tomorrow.

I like that camera setup, may look into that or something similar, for myself.
