I have read on here that these pumps were pretty bullet proof. Does anybody know what CAN fail on them?
All of the oil in my tank leaked underneath the engine this spring after putting it in the water. I cleaned the bilge and shined everything up. Took off the air box, checked all the lines, etc. You wouldn't believe the amount of oil that came out after taking the pump off. Which part of the pump normally stops the oil from coming in until needed?

Thanks everyone,

The only problem I have seen is the pressed in fitting that the house connects to on the pump fell out of mine and drained all of the oil out. Fortunately, I was running premix for break in when it happened. I had just had a complete rebuild when it happened.

The white banjo fitting in your picture is what houses the check valve to prevent draining into the engine.

Thank you everyone! I ordered the best looking used pump I could find, and a new banjo fitting kit including new lines. Ordered two brand new check valves as well. That should do it!

Is the crankcase full of oil? If so, it probably isn't your oil pump, probably the crank seals on the center of the crank. What oil are you using?

It's a brand new 717 right off the shelf, only about 10-15 hours on it. I doubt that it's even the pump itself. The check valves and lines are from the old 650 that was in it.
