93 SPX fuel baffel pickup rebuild issue

I got this SPX after it was sitting for a lot of years. It's all working except the gas guage. I got the baffel out and the float comes out the bottom with no problems. Everything looks clean and looks like it is functioning properly. I think to test the guage I put 12 volts across the leads coming off the baffel and the guage should go to "full". Is this correct? If the guage does function after this test what would be the next thing to test? Is there a fuse involved somewhere? Should I see if the float actully "floats" as it comes out and I can test that as I heard that they can become "gas logged". Any info would be great as after I fix this one I need to fix my 97 GSX with the same problem. Thanks.

I just realized I should short the leads to read a full tank not put voltage to it. Also I think I read the fuse may be in the baffel? Is this correct? Thanks

Take the baffle out and pull the bottom off...I bet you find the magnet just fell off the float. Once you fix that put a ohm meter on the two wires and move the float. It should make the number change. If it just says open, it needs to be replaced. I have used ones available if you need it.

Thanks for the info! When I took the baffel apart I didn't see a magnet laying inside it and bottom fuel filter was intact. The float looked good and clean and I saw a picture of it on the forum. Mine looked like the picture with two rollers on it. What do these magnets look like? Thanks.

Test?... You didn't mention what your results were from the gage test. Like you stated, disconnect the wires at the baffle. Take a piece of wire and short between the two. Then, power up the gages by pushing your start button. You should see "Full" on the gage.

When checking the baffle, if you pull it out, you can use a volt meter to test the resistance by inverting the baffle, slowly upside down. You should see the resistance change as the magnets cross each of the pickups on the circuit board.

Those two "rollers" you saw, were the magnets. They are, in some cases, two; one on each side, or four; two on each side.

Sorry about the testing. The battery is dead from being the end of winter here so I will test tomorrow. With the baffel being out I can test with the float in and all should function, Since the float is complete it seems it might be the fuse or the guage itself. I guess the float could be gas logged but I think it was floating when I took it out. It's also an easy test I will do tomoorrow. Thanks for the quick replies!! Craig

I have seen some of those type of floats sink, and I have seen them for some reason not have enough magnetism or something...I swap it with another float and the thing works again.

I figured you had the foam float...someone must have upgraded it in the past.
