93 Seadoo XP questions

I picked up a 93 XP last night since it was too good of a deal to pass up. $200 including a nice wood shop stand made out of treated 4x4s.

Compression is 150/150 and runs well on the trailer. I do have a few questions though as I've never had this earlier hull and a 657.

1. Is this ski even worth considering to keep or is the 657 just too underpowered?

2. VTS doesn't appear to work but I haven't dug into it yet. Any known issues with this early VTS? I assume water intrusion isn't the common failure since it's mounted up front and up higher in the hull.

3. There no cooling line coming out of the engine. Does all water leave through the exhaust or is this a hack job?

I've downloaded the manual to start reading but not familiar with this early ski/engine. I don't plan on spending too much time on it since I've got so many other projects and work is crazy.

The elbow at the back of the head where the water is suppose to exit the ski is likely full of sand. Take it apart and clean it.

There is currently no hose connected there to exit the ski. There is only a short 3 inch hose with a flush valve and that's it.

I think I've figured out my question to #3. There is only 1 line from the head on a 657 which is the exit. All cooling goes through the exhaust first, then the engine so there is no line on the other cooling fitting coming off the head.

The 657 XP is a fun little ski to ride. You will still enjoy it

Thanks, I guess I'll find out in the spring lol. Maybe ride a few times and put up for sale as a quick flip.
 
I bet the cooling is rights that is how my 95 gtx sounds like. A hook up fitting at the end of the head. If the water comes out the piss hole in back should be good.

Thanks! Yeah it just worried me at first not seeing a second line connected to the head. I may test it out this week since it's in the 60s in ohio.

Ugh, same here. This ski isn't winterized, so would have been perfect. I had a chance on wednesday, but got too late. Now it's been rain all day every day and getting colder tomorrow [emoji17]
 
Well all the rain did give me a day to clean the garage. As part of this deal I also bought an engine hoist and lift straps from the guy for $125. It should at least give me a way to buff the underside of my other skis once I add some safety precautions.

Anyone ever use an engine hoist before for this? I'd love to have a ceiling hoist but I don't think any amount of reinforcement to the rafters would make that safe.

Thanks! I think that's the highest I'll ever go and it's very sturdy even if I pull down on the nose. Thinking I may get some U channel and make a safety bracket to go around the hydrolic ram when it's up in case that would ever fail. Kinda like the safety on a bobcat.
 
Lol, crazy high. I have extra hulls if it drops.if your cart was higher you could buff it on that. That's how I did my HX, I slid it off the front and buffed that, then skid of of the back. I did have it tied to the stand while doing that. There might be pics on my HX thread.

Yeah this cart kinda sucks but came with the ski. Too short, too heavy, and not a good design. I'll be making my own soon so I don't kill my back wrenching. Trailer is a perfect height, but tires get in the way and take up too much space for winter.

Here is my stand just google twinturbostangs bombproof stand it'd from GH and I can't post the link. Then under images you will find the cut sheet you'll need 4 casters ( I buy them at Harbor Freight 2 straight 4" and 2 swivel 4") 16 1/4" X 1-1/4" long lag screws a 25 pack of 1/4" flat washers and a bunch of 3" screws and some carpet for the bunks and I think 7 2X4X8'. I can bang one together in about 40 minutes.


Here's what they look like and I hang the ski off and can sit on the ground and buff the bottom.

Then I made a stubby to fit my 95 under my storage rack but I also made legs that I can screw to the stubby runners to flip a ski and put them in the footwells to really wetsand and buff the bottom.

I actually had just downloaded those images a few weeks ago and already got the HF casters. I got all 4 swivels though so I'm gonna rethink that after seeing what a pain this current stand is to move around with all 4 swivel casters.

My harbor consistently has all swivel or just one straight. So a few of my stands have swivels that I welded straight, lol. This last stand I just built last week had the correct swivel and straight casters, finally. This stand is sick, you'll love it. I was gonna make my own from steel but your just about $40ish into it when you're finished and wood cuts so much faster than steel.

Yeah a steel stand would be great but would cost quite a bit more in both $ and time. Not to mention I don't have a plasma cutter so would go through quite a few chop saw wheels with all those cuts. My welds also tend to be functional and not aesthetically pleasing, lol.

Hopefully I can get the stand done this week before I resume weekly travel again next week for work. Hard to get anything done being home 2.5 days a week, especially when I have to fit in time for the lady as well. I might just need to unload some projects and focus on 3 or so keepers. Craigslist is just so damn addicting, lol.

Alright one last stand question... Are you able to get the legs of your hoist under the stand to quickly just drop it on?

The arm on my hoist isn't long enough to spin the ski completely so it's a little tricky now getting it on the stand. If the legs of the hoist fit under the stand it would be perfect. I may need to alter the stand design a bit if not to make this work for me.

Well, that's tricky. Yes and no. If I extend the legs ask the way out and extend the boom all the way out Yes, if not it's doable but a little sketchy. My engine hoist is not foldable like yours, mine is pre, foldable cause it's older. I'll check later to see if I have any pics

Alright, Thanks Racer. I'm thinking of a redesign with each corner being an upright 4x4 post with 2x4 X bracing which will allow my lift to get under the cart. Just hope I can make it sturdy enough horizontally with that design. Wood is cheap though if it doesn't work.
