Changed battery and plugs but wouldn't start. Cleaned fuel filter and fuel lines. No spark- dried out grey box but now when it starts, it won't stop with stop button or removing lanyard. What could be the problem?

Check the grounds in the gray box. I bet you have a shorted wire somewhere with the lanyard.

i believe i had a similar problem when i first got my '90 sp. seems like there's a ground inside the stator cover near the coil pack that was crudded up. if everything inside the grey box is ok,try looking inside the front cover. later

sounds a little too much like the movie "Christine" for me, personally I would call an Exorcist :reddevil:

It was a short

:hurray: I finally was able to get to my XP after letting the gray box dry out and it starts up and stops when I remove the lanyard. Thanks for your help.

i cant stress this enough . in the world of marine electrical you must , must , must keep your grounds cleaned and coated . it will drive you crazy chasing a bad ground . almost everything that has power on any water craft or boat must be followed by a ground wire
