hay guys about a yer and a half ago i had an incident on my 96 gsx,
the expansion chamber sprung a leak and filled the engine bay with water. i quickly emptied
and when i got home flushed with fresh water and wd-40'd it all.
not i need to get the ski started for sale.. i have again sprayed INOX in the a little in the spark plug holes
and got a new battery and expansion pipe on.. before starting i checked that i could turn the drive shaft by hand,
which is possible.. and tried starting it.. plugs grounded.. but i only just turns 1/8 and not any more..
could this be a hydrualic lock? or what are the other possiblities?

When you say you can turn it over by hand, it that all the way over, 360 degrees, with the plugs out? And how hard is it to turn over by hand?

If that's the case check the battery, take it to an auto parts store and have it load tested. If the battery tests O.K., check the battery cables and grounds for corrosion.

its a little tough to turn but gets easy after a certain point then goes hard again, i think upon compression. but still turnable.
will check the corrosion as suggested.

If the plugs are removed it's not compression. Try pouring a little about 1 to 2 ozs. of Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF in the piston holes let sit at least overnight, the see if it turns easier.

Lou

No don't use WD-40. I thought you might have trouble finding Marvel Mystery Oil in Oz, that's why I also suggested ATF, Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Unfortunately what you described is not the correct way to take care of a flooded motor. Even worse...it sat. maybe you didnt tell us everything...

Its IMPERATIVE that a motor run ASAP...like hours...not days after a flood. Get water out, get it to fire, rev it up....you gotta really open it up. I suggest taking it to the lake and running the crap out of it for 15-20mins. Then when you get home FOG the crap out of it. WD-40 is NOT fogging oil.

Pull the plugs and turn by hand. If it turns over, then put a towel over the plug holes and try to crank it. See if theres anything in the motor...water...oil...

Nick,

It's been sitting for a year and a half like this, it's likely rusted up, hopefully, but not likely, just surface rust in the cylinders.

Lou

Did you clean the battery posts prior to installing the new battery? I see this alot in skis atvs motorcycles etc. The post should be nice and shiney before installing the power leads. What happens is the starter can't draw enough amps to crank the engine over because of the ozidation of the posts. You end up with either a slow cranking engine or one that can't turn at all or turns just untill the compression gets builds up and can't overcome it.

hay guys.. you fellas are awesome here.. loads of info..
well i cleaned up the battery post, they are nice a shiny and reconnected the leads to it..
and took the plugs out.. and cranked it, Successfully with a mouth full of oil.. doesnt seem to have any rust for water in it..
just oil.. i cranked it for about 3 secs at a time.. and put the plugs back in.. cranked it again and its done the same thing..
so took the plags out again, crank it, clean and replace plugs cranks for a bit then compress'... also looks like its running uber rich on oil..

I had a problem w/my ski not turning over even w/charged battery ended being combo of starter going bad and or positive cable to starter was corroded and hanging on by a few copper strands.

Reach underneath and try to feel where cable connects to starter and see if cable solid.

connections are all good to..
took the plugs out but left them on coil leads to see if they are sparking, when i crank the motor over...
low and behold no spark.. :banghead: now would this be the coil busted or could it be elsewhere? how should i test this?

Hold the throttle wide open and turn over for 30-45sec and REALLY get all the oil out.

If you didnt see water then you maybe in the clear there...BUT you have either leaky RV crank seals, or the actual RV seal.

Once you get the oil out enough to allow you to crank it with the plugs in put a little gas down the plug holes and get it to fire.

Then...you will not know how bad the issue is till it sits again. If you let it sit a month and its full of oil again...it needs a full rebuild.

If it fires....then watch the exhaust hole and see how much oil comes out of it. Thats the issue...how much do you like the environment...lol
