Getting ready to drop the motor in, probably tomorrow afternoon.

Anyone think of anything I should watch for or check before I put it in?

How much oil should be in the crankcase when I check that?

Any suggestions or warnings would be GREATLY appreciated, since this is my first motor swap in one of these things.

engine?.......

Seems I remember this thing came ready to go. No assembly required. Did it come with any paperwork that said you had some requirements to perform?

If your other engine was shimmed, make sure you put the shims back the way they came out.

Oil in the rotary chamber doesn't matter. When you hook it back to your oil tank, it will fill by gravity to where it is suppose to be.

What about the oil pump? Is it a new one also? If not, because of the problems you had with the other motor, I'd see about doing a volume test with it before you totally rely on it..........and don't forget to add oil for the break in!............

New oil pump was included.

I wasn't sure how that crankcase was filled. I was assuming it had oil in it from the factory. So, does it rotate or recycle that oil or does the original oil that gets in there by gravity end up being the oil it uses for life? I am unclear on the concept on how the lower end gets lubed...

Otherwise, I have the Break-In Procedure from the owners manual to follow.

YEAH BABY - give me some gas!!!!!

Do you mean your adding nitrous to your 787

I think in this case it stands for New Old Stock?

Can you even add nitrous to a 2 stroke?
Wouldn't you trash the motor the first time you hit the button?

You can add nitrous to any motor you want in moderation and it will be perfectly fine. I would say these motors could handle maybe a 20hp shot and that is about it. Most motorcycles can handle about 40-50hp shots! But for the boat it would be useless I think.

Yes, New Old Stock....

Getting ready to put it in this afternoon, unless I hit any snags.

Also ordered a swirl impeller that should be here by friday. May be back in the water by the weekend...:hurray::hurray::hurray:

NICE - good luck with it - please keep us posted.

Was it hard to find the motor?
If you don't mind sharing - how much?

Found it on ebay a couple days after I blew up my original one. Bid up to $850, plus $175 shipping.

Instructions for 787 say to add 1oz SAE 30 to the crankcase...Any ideas if I need to do this for this motor? Is this just to give it something to start on without starting dry?

Here is what I have so far...

I am no two stroke expert - but I have rebuilt a motor or two in my time

I always pre-oiled everything during a rebuild that gets oil. I would even crank the motors over with no spark or fuel to get the oil pressure up before I'd run them. Yes, I know the 787 is different than good old four strokes when it comes to lubrication.
If I were in your shoes - I'd add the SAE 30 AND drop some injection oil in each cylinder, let the oil sit then turn her over by hand to ensure that the rings and piston walls are lubed up well. I have used Marvel Mystery oil to free up stuck rings and things of that sort - you may want to give it a shot - depending on how long the motor sat - you may have a stuck ring.
Just a precaution - I'm sure the motor was pickled well from the factory, but since it sat for some time you want to make sure you lube it well before running it.
Nice pics - looks like you had to paint her - there is some paint on the chains.

Yup, had to paint it. Repainted the carbs and exhaust as well. POR-15 on the rear mounting plate.

I have the fill cap off, and see some oil on the gears, but will add some anyway. There is a nice layer of oil on the piston and cylinder walls. I can move the motor by hand at the PTO with ease with pistons out. There is also some oil dripping out of the carb holes when I pulled the plastic plugs out. Also some in the injection lines, but there are lots of bubbles, so I will have to prime that really good.

Hey scoop....you may have caught it, but that 30wt oil, needs to added to the counterbalance assy...

Is that the large 1" or so plastic screw-cap with the flat-bladed slot? rear of engine, off to the left, just in front of PTO?
