I am about to rebuild my carbs off of my 97 - 787 engine and a friend recommended I remove the fuel lines and let the carbs soak in mineral sprits for a day. Any thoughts on if this is advisable or not?

Thanks,
Scott

Personally I perfer to just use carb cleaner in a can and lots of air. Soaking them usually makes all the paint flake off.

Soaking doesn't do anything other than take time. (wasted time)

As above... spray cleaner, and compressed air.
