My '96 XP was running before winter, now when I put the key on, it beeps once, then 4 times. Also, do I need to have the wire to my speed senser connected? I was looking at the wires from it, and the ground wire has no insulation, is that normal? Any ideas?

not good.

One beep first is saying something is wrong. 4 beeps says the mpem is not talking to the CDI.

Is it an 800 XP?

Did you hook up the battery backward, or jump start it?

it's the 787 engine. Will the speed senser have anything to do with it or can I disconnect the speed senser all together?

battery is hooked up correctly with a full charge, and have never jump started it. could it be just a bad connection?

Nope... the speed sensor won't have anything to do with it. (unless it's shorted out)

If you didn't jump it, or hook up the battery wrong... I'd start with opening the electrical box, and check over all the connections.

in the wiring to the sensor, the ground wire has no insulation, is that right? Can I simply unplug it from the box? I will check all other connections, thanks.

The speed sensor ground wire is supposed to have insulation. It's ok to just unplug it. How much insulation is missing? Does it look like it melted off?

DAWG

the only insulation on the wire was at the plug connection, the rest is bare wire. It doesn't look like there was ever any, but the wire does have oxidation chalk the full length. It doesn't look as if it melted. This afternoon, I checked all connection and still getting the 4 darn beeps!!! Is there any way of testing the mpem or the CDI? (transducer wire)

You will need to get a copy of the service manual, and do the checks.

Did you open your box, and check the wires between the MPEM and CDI??
