“Hi, I’m considering using a LiFePO4 battery as a starter battery. Would this type of battery damage my boat’s charging system?;and is it compatible with my boat?” I know that the Lifepo4 battery must be a cranking battery to enable engine starting. Thanks for you help

Yes you could replace the lead/acid battery with a cranking LiFePO4 or other Li-Ion battery, as long as it is the proper size and made for starting motors like motorcycles/ ATV's...

The reason I'd like to go lithium is I'd like to avoid adding a second battery to run my upgraded stereo.

This is a full size battery compared to the battery used in the Challenger, so having it fit to the boat could be a challenge, but from my younger years when I had high powered sound system in my cars the issue was never the battery but more the alternator to keep everything working, so depending on how many watts your system is you might be draining more that what the engine magneto is producing, no battery will compensate for that.
Get a voltmeter and keep a eye on it, if you get below 13v with the engine running it is time to lower the sound.

Lets add if your intention is to be able to run the sound system with the engine off then this battery will help you do that, but keep a eye on the voltage and it should not go below 12.4v with the engine off, lower that that you are taking a chance of not starting the engine, that is why the RV crowd use two batteries with a battery isolator.

I plan to run the stereo with the boat mainly off so I'll post my results. Thanks again for your advice. I'll definately add a voltmeter. From what I've read on this battery you install an app on your phone and monitor it using bluetooth. The smart battery also keeps a 25 percent reserve not allowing power draw below that level so you always have enough juice to start the engine. I'll post again on how I end up installing the larger group 31 battery.
