Wondering if anyone had any tips on what might be going on...runs great on the trailer but when I put it in the water the engine bogs down almost like it's in the learning key mode. It definitely doesn't sound right either. I checked the plugs (which are new this season) and they look good, not fouled. The battery was tested and it's good (fresh charge and reading 12.8v), also took it to the local auto part store just to be safe and it tested out fine there. The rectifier seems to be working and I'm seeing 14.2v at the battery terminals with the ski running. I did get a 12v low light on the water, but only once and it never came on again which was strange. Any ideas out there?

Let's go over the easy cheap checks first...

Spark plugs can still fail even when new. Could have been dropped. Under higher rpm and load, if the are weak they fail. The tab screwed on the top of the spark plug removed? Supercharged 4-Tec eats spark plugs, but your is not Supercharged.
Check under and inside the impeller with flashlight and mirror.
Treat the fuel (SeaFoam). Fueling with good 92 Octane? No ethinol?

Then you could go with compression test (180psi). Checking for problem with: exhaust blockage, coil failure, etc.
Any codes.

Low 12 volt temporarily is not an issue.

The plugs look good when I pulled them...ill try replacing them and see if it solves the problem. The tabs are removed on the ones installed, impeller looks good, fresh tank of 93...

Looks like there might be a little too much oil in there, nothing severe though, just past the full line. You think that might contribute?

No codes are on the display.

I'll change the plugs and test it out this week and repost.

The 4-tecs LOVE good plugs,, Simply replace them. They can look excellent, but in most cases, replacing them is he solution.

Let us know what you come up with.

The oil level being too high is a real problem with the Supercharged Engine, which you don't have. To be on the safe side, check the oil level on level ground and remove/add until it is under the full line.

Any of the 4-tec engines do NOT like too much oil. It creates crank case pressure and screws with the engine and the performance..

yep coastie is right, simply remove some oil till it is just below the full mark, i run mine right in the middle of add and full lines to be safe.

Okay - installed the new plugs and just took it out on the water for a test drive. In the first few minutes it was still bogged down and wouldn't rev pas 5800 rpm, same issue. That lasted for a minute or so...then I hit it full throttle for an extended period and it just opened up and full power restored. I turned it off and on a bunch and rode it hard to see if it would start to bog down again for about 30 minutes. It didn't bog down again, rode great, and it looks like the new plugs were the fix. I still need to take some oil out but my neighbor has my pump and he wasn't home unfortunately...its just above the full line slightly and I'll bring it down to half way after your suggestions.

What do you guys think caused the engine to bog down in the first few minutes? I thought that was odd and ...Either way it ran great after that.

The fact it bogged after the new plugs leads me to think you have a leaky injector. Oil to full is a problem with 4-Tecs. To much crank pressure and the engine will lose performance.

The real test will be the next run out on the water IMO.
