2008 gti 130 startup issue

I installed the battery on my 2008 GTI and when attaching the key the first time I got the traditional beeps, however when I hit the start button nothing happened. On additional attempts, the instrument panel powers up and still will not start. Is the battery shot or is there possibly another electrical issue with the machine. Any help will be appreciated.

pull the battery and take it to autozone and have them run a test to determine that its still in good shape or not. Its free! also, did you keep it on a battery tender over the off season?

No as to the tender, but I put it on a battery charger for a couple of days prior to install. Hopefully it's as simple as a battery. Thanks for the response
