There are so many causes of this kind of situation, basically one of two general things, either a loss in power from the engine or a problem with the propulsion system. (while a bad impeller or wear ring usually causes RPM at the limiter with lower speed or cavitation, it is possible for there to be impeller damage that limits RPM.
Are there any faults, indicated by a Maintenance warning, check engine light?
Low RPM from low engine power an be caused by many reasons, unfortunately:
- Oil level too high, should not be above the center of the oil range on dipstick.
- Exhaust leak, run ski with seat off and see if you gain RPM
- Low fuel pressure, faulty fuel pump or clogged filters, need to check pressure
- Bad spark plugs
- Bad fuel
- Low compression on one or more cylinders
- MAP sensor faulty
- Throttle cable not adjusted properly, not allowing throttle plate to fully open
- TPS not set properly
Probably several more that I cannot think of right now…..
