2006 GTX Fuel Gauge Problem

Hi all,

I had a fun filled weekend riding my 2006 GTX. On Saturday my low fuel warning came on and I fueled up. It only took 8 gallons and I launched again and noticed that the fuel gauge was still reading empty and the fuel light and warning beep were active. When I start it up "SENSOR" briefly apears on the display screen and then "FUEL LO."

I haven't had a chance to check all wiring connections, but I will do that tonight.

Has anyone had this happen?

Thanks!

Checked all fuses and connection to the sending unit. All look good. Any other ideas on what could be wrong?

I would think it is a sending unit issue. If you can easily pull the sending unit, it will be easy to test it using an OHM meter.

Jonny did you get the problem resolved? If so what was the fix? As I have the same issue.

Thanks Paul

Thanks for asking. I took my ski to a friend of mine that is a reputable Sea Doo mechanic in the Pittsburgh area. It is the fuel sensor in the tank. He has the part on order and it should be in next week. So I have to ride it with the low fuel beep all weekend. Oh well, could be worse. I was going to try to fix it myself but didn't have the time. Plus I had an extra key made and he made another key I had into a learning key.

Thanks, I replaced my sensor this week and still have the problem. I will let you know if I get it figured out.

Thanks, I'm hoping that that is my problem. Does yours flash sensor on the display briefly when you first plug the key in?

Yes and it flashes when the tank is full and the gauge reads empty. Once it gets down to about 3/4 tank the gauge reads full until it gets to 1/4 tank then the gauge goes to 3/4. It makes no sense, the ohms test reads correctly on the sensor, 5 ohms when full and 90 when empty. Connections and fuse all good.

Hmm... Mine was jumping around at first, now it is reading empty all the time and fuel light flashing with "fuel lo" message. I will let you know if the sensor fixes mine.

UPDATE: I just got my ski back from my mechanic and it wasn't the sensor

He belives it is a problem with the MPEM. Has anyone else had this problem with the fuel gauge not getting signal from the MPEM? I know they are expensive to replace.

If I do replace it, where is the best place to buy a new one. Can I put a used one in, am I stuck with the hours that are on the used MPEM. My ski only has 36 hours on it and I would like to keep it that way.

Jonny, I found this in my shop manual, section 11 (Electrical System) It's from an '02 manual, but it may point you in the right direction.

Information Center Verification
The BLACK wire is the ground. The RED/PURPLE wire is the 12 Vdc from the battery. It is protected by a fuse on the MPEM; the
fuse “MPEM” and the fuse “ACC” on DI models. The accuracy of some features of the Information Center can be checked with a potentiometer.

Fuel Level
1. Disconnect the 4-circuit connector housing of the Info Center.
2. Using an appropriate terminal remover, remove the PINK wire from the tab housing.
3. Reconnect the connector housing.
4. Disconnect the 2-circuit connector housing which contains a PURPLE and BLACK wires.
5. Remove the BLACK wire from the receptacle housing.
6. Reconnect the connector housing.
7. Connect potentiometer test probes to the PINK and BLACK wires.
8. Adjust potentiometer to the resistance values as per following chart to test the accuracy of the gauge.
NOTE: The gauge must be activated to obtain a reading.

GTX 4-TEC

RESISTANCE (Ω) WET HEIGHT FROM
BOTTOM (mm)
4.8 ± 2.2 247 ± 5.0
17.8 ± 2.2 207 ± 5.0
27.8 ± 2.2 183 ± 5.0
37.8 ± 2.2 158 ± 5.0
47.8 ± 2.2 133 ± 5.0
57.8 ± 2.4 105 ± 5.0
67.8 ± 2.8 76 ± 5.0
77.8 ± 3.6 55 ± 5.0
89.8 ± 3.6 35.3 ± 5.0

I also came across this information concerning ECU and MPEM replacement.

NOTE: If the old EMS ECU or MPEM is working, it must be read inside B.U.D.S. prior to removing it from the vehicle to carry vehicle information and history to the new EMS ECU or MPEM.

Before replacing a MPEM or EMS ECU, always check electrical connections. Make sure that they are very tight and they make good contact and that they are corrosion-free. Particularly check MPEM and EMS ECU ground connections. Ensure that contacts are good and clean. A “defective module” could possibly be repaired simply by unplugging and replugging the MPEM or EMS ECU. The voltage and current might be too weak to go through dirty wire pins. Check carefully if pins show signs of moisture, corrosion or if they look dull. Clean pins properly and then coat them prior to assembling
as follows:

AMP connectors, EMS ECU connectors, OPS and OSPS connectors: Apply a thin coat of DEOXIT contact lubricant (P/N 293 550 015) Other connectors: Apply a silicon-based dielectric grease or other appropriate lubricant. If the newly replaced MPEM or EMS ECU is working, try the old one and recheck if it works. Ensure that all electronic components are genuine — any modification on the wiring harness may lead to generate fault codes or bad operation.

Hey, Did any of you fellows find the real problem?? I have the same issue and have tried about everything I can think of. Replaced the sending unit, cleaned all connections from MPEM to fuel pump/level sensor, cleaned all battery grounds and engine ground connections, checked all MPEM fuses, the list goes on. Maybe one of you all figured it out. I suspect I still have a ground issue somewhere but cannot figure out where. Thanks

I did not yet but I think it is the MPEM unit itself. I bought 2 used ones on EBay and they both corrected my fuel gauge problem but both threw a 1502 Tops Sensor Error code. I think this was because the MPEMs were 2004. I believe they changed in 2005 but had the same part numbers.

So I finally got an MPEM that worked plug and play. It was off the same year GTI. Plugged it in today and my fuel gauge works without any strange messages. Woo hoo. Can't wait till spring. Need a new wear ring though.

Thanks Johnny, I was just about to take it to the dealer because I had run out of ideas, (and warm weather). Will keep my eyes open for a used MPEM.
