Have a 2006 GTI SE. Had wear ring and components replaced last fall, new gauges and it has been running great all season. Last time out it ran ok for a few minutes but after warming up when I went full throttle alarm went off. Alarm stops when back off throttle, even if going 3500-4500 rpm. I brought it back, flushed it and tried again. Same thing. Seemed to run a little rough after alarm went off but nothing horrible. No codes displayed. Looked at engine and nothing obviously wrong (not overly hot, no leaks). So I bought a code reader (can doo pro) and scanned it. Only code displayed was a low battery (which I think came up because the laptop I was using for the scanner was so slow).

Any ideas? It is kept on a floating dock so I don't think I could have sucked anything up in the short time before alarm went off.

Ok, sometimes violating the keep it simple rule ... Tried scanning again and got no results. Alarm didn't go off next time out but it ran worse. Friday night it dawned on me-what if it's just bad gas? Poured in way more startron than called for, and a little techron for good measure. Took it out and it ran poorly. Then a little better. Kept improving. No alarms and eventually up to full speed. Put in a little more startron and took it out Sunday and not perfect but acceptable and better all the time. I've been very lucky and never had a gas issue with boat or jet ski. Just a heads up not to overlook the obvious (but of course I do have a nice scanner now!)

If it is actually bad or stale gas it doesn’t matter how much additives you add it won’t fix it. Old fuel can actually damage your engine. If you do suspect bad fuel drain it and add fresh gas. Don’t rely on the “fix in a bottle”.
