2005 Sportster LE DI - Single Long Beep and an abnormal smell

Not open for further replies.
this is the 2-stroke model

Last time i took out my boat it started hesitating when i would give it throttle and ran rough intermitently so i went back and trailered it immediately.

I got it home, checked the spark plugs and they were not looking great (only had 4 runs this year on them) so i changed them and added some fuel treatment (that was approved for 2 stroke motors)

I took it out again today, and it started up fine, but gave me a long single beep. I pulled away from the dock to see if it did it again and about 30 seconds later it did (and i started smelling something a little unusual). SO, i trailered it again and brought it home.

Does anyone have an idea of what this could be? I would like to avoid taking it to one of the few dealerships in the Dallas area that works on Seadoos since they like to charge $110/hr labor. If i must do that, i will, but i would really prefer not to.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!

still really could use some help...would love to be able to go out this weekend

even if it is only giving me a name of someone to go to (that is a non-dealer) in the DFW area.

Thanks

Your going to have to provide more information about this smell before the guys can help you out. Electrical?.. Fuel??.. Oil??.. Exhaust??
Could be anything.

One long beep is saying that something is wrong. Unless it's continuous. Then it's overheating.

Press your start/stop button 5 times, and plug the lanyard on, and listen for the beeps. (how many, and how long)

The smell was really faint and faded fast... if i was going to guess i would say smelled a little like burning plastic but when i opened up the compartment, nothing looked melted or anything... the smell was faint enough that it could have been from another boat, but i dont think it was

I turned on the battery cutoff, pressed start/stop 5 times and it did a fast beep followed by a long beep (1/4 second and 3/4 second if i was going to guess). It beeped before putting in the lanyard... after putting in the lanyard it didnt beep at all

The beeps i did here were not the normal lanyard plugging in beeps

Thanks for the quick responses guys... really appreciate it... called the boat repair shops i could find that would work on seadoo jetboats and they are all 2-3 weeks backlogged and have rediculous prices so really hope i can do this myself

OK... since you are getting beeps at all is a good thing.

From earlier... one long beep means something is wrong. BUT... one of those things can be that it's not reading the lanyard.

One short, and one long beep is just letting you know that you entered advanced mode. Did you then immediately plug on your lanyard?

And sorry... I just looked back at my last post. After you get your sort and long beep, you put on your lanyard, and then push the start/stop button one more time.

Do that... and let us know what other beeps you get.

yes, i plugged in the lanyard directly after the short and long beep

If the lanyard wasnt being read, it wouldnt have started on the lake would it?

And last thing, after the short and long beep, then plugging in the lanyard, pressing the button wont start my engine will it? or do i need to be ready to turn water fast?

I will try this when i get home from work if you have responded to the last part.

Thanks again for the help!

if it starts.... nothing is wrong, and you can just shut the engine off. if something is wrong, you will get more beeps.

If it starts, do i need to have water running to it fast?

Or can i just shut it off right afterwards without hurting anything?

Thanks again!

You won't hurt your engine if it's run without water for a few seconds. Honistly... it could probably run for a full minute without water... but I wouldn't try to find out. :)

But like I said... if it starts... then there are no issues with the electronics.

I had to go back and read what the original problem was.....

In your first post... Was the long beep a continuous beep, or was it a single one second beep?

It was a 1-2 second beep followed by about a minute of silence.

I took this to be what the maintenance manual calls as Beep Code 5 (2 second beep followed by 58 seconds of silence, on a loop)

The manual stated it could be the: Throttle Position Sensor, Water Temp Sensor, Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor, Sensor Supply Fault (TPS and MAPS), Very Low Battery Voltage, Low Fuel Level.

I guaruntee i dont have low fuel... with the engine off, battery voltage read 12.5 V.

The TPS would make a little sense to me given the original problem (before beeps) was a throttle hesitation, but the throttle didnt hesitate until it was around 3-4k RPM and would eventually catch and accelerate normally.

Ill be able to respond again in a 3-4 hours with the results pressing the button 5 more times, plugging in the key, and pressing it once more.

Thanks for all the help Dr. Honda... I'll have to buy you a beer or something if you are ever in the DFW area

i turned on power, pressed the start/stop button 5 times (without the key in) and it did the short-long beep combo again.

i put in the key and it didnt make a sound (just like yesterday). After pressing the start/stop button one more time, it beeped two short beeps (just like when i plug in the key like normal).

After pressing the start/stop button and it making the normal beeps, the only different sound from normal was the lack of the mechanical sound i normally hear when i put in the key (electronic choke maybe???)

When i put in they key without having pressed the start/stop 5 times, everything sounds like it normally does (the 2 beeps and the mechanical sound)

Well... 2 short beeps in advanced mode means it isn't reading your lanyard. BUT... if you put on your lanyard normally, you get your normal beeps?

Will it start?

After rereading the original post.... is this the first time that you've had it out this year? Was there a lot of smoke? What do your spark plugs look like?

last weekend when i took it out was like the 4th time this year i took it out... the time before that (like a week before) is when it was hesitating to rev when i applied throttle (above 50% thorttle that is).

After the hesitation, i changed the plugs and the first run on the new plugs is when the 2 second beep every 58 seconds started. i verified the plugs model (used the exact NGK plugs called out in manual) and rechecked the gap (is within 0.001)

There was no smoke (or at least little enough i didnt notice). If it isnt recognizing the lanyard (i assume that is the key), it wouldnt beep twice when i plug it in would it?

Cant help you with the beeps but DISCOUNT MAINTENANCE MARINE in Pentego are really good and seem fair...I bought a boat from a guy who just had them rebuild the engine..They performed the 10-hr break in check and oil change as if I was the one who paid for the engine rebuild...Very nice guys...

wellllllllll............

I hate to say it, but since it's a DI boat... you may need to take it to a dealer so the can plug it into their computer to see if any of the sensors are going bad.

One thing you can check is the fuel pressure. If your pump is dropping in pressure, you would have issues as soon as you start to apply the throttle.

yeah, im pretty much conceded to the dealer at this point, but would still prefer one that isnt just a big name sale place with a service department.

I called Discount Maint Marine but they are so back logged they are not even accepting more boats. Cowtown Motor Sports has 3 week backlog and the most expensive in town (the giant dealer type im trying to avoid)

Thanks for all the help everyone
