i live in grand lake CO. my 04 sportster barely gets on plane(already tried impeller) and only goes 35mph and 5000 rpm's. i'm spending this winter in texas and brought my sea doo along. down here i get 7000 rpm's and 55mph. is there any way to get some more rpm's at my CO home, i'm headed back in may. i know the 9000' altitude is the problem, but jet skis and ski doo snowmobiles get way more than the 5000 my sportser gets there. the motor just seems to stop at 5000, it definately isnt trying for more, it seems as if its limited there. any ideas?

How to select impellers for your personal watercraft:
To provide your personal watercraft with the best performance, SOLAS lists a reference guide for your selection of the best possible impellers:
a. If the RPM is too high, then you need to go for a higher pitch.
b. A lower pitch angle of the impeller should be suggested for heavier boat.
c. A lower pitch angle of the impeller is suggested in high altitude area, such as mountains.
d. A higher pitch angle of the impeller is suggested in cold weather areas.
e. A higher pitch angle of the impeller is suggested for top speed performance preference.

this machine has been at 9000' since new. no matter what impeller, it still onlt gets 5000rpm. i brought it to texas and ran it yesterday. it stayed at 5000rpm and beeped at me repeatedly. i ran it for 7-8 min and turned it off for ten. after i started it up again, it shot right to 7000rpm and jumped on to plane. it seemed to have figured out the change in altitude. is there some oxygen sensor or atmosphere sensor that prohibits rpms in colorado(9000').
some new cars have a check engine light that goes on when they first drive up the pass from denver. thank you again for any input. i would love to be able to break the 35mph barrier in my boat when its in grand lake colorado.(it feels like a totaly different machine down here easily 55mph)

High altitude
There is a MAP (manifold air pressure) sensor located at the base of the front throttle body. It is a dual purpose sensor. It measures atmosphere pressure and intake manifold pressure. The computer uses these inputs (along with others) to manage the engines fuel injection and ignition system.
Sounds like your dealing with a faulty MAP sensor.

At 9000 ft density altitude a non supercharged engine will only be producing about 70% of its sea level rated power. It stands to reason that it will not push the boat as fast as it will at sea level no mater what pitch impeller is installed. A lower pitch impeller will let the engine turn at a higher RPM but will not produce the same thrust of a high pitch impeller at the same RPM.

thank you so much! if i can get any of these rpms at home, it will be awesome. is this an easy fix? i have the full shop manual i downloaded last year, i'll check it out. any recommendation as to where to order one of these.
