Finally got my Skis back on the lake after sitting all last summer. My XP was having issue with running intermittent on one cylinder which I traced to a corroded connector on the bottom coil. I replace this connector and she fired up and idled fine.
Took it out on the lake to burn off the old gas (no ethanol) and when I got out the maintenance light came on for about a minute. Bogged down would max around 5k RPM. I went back to idle. Light went off and boom away I went no issues. I rode it hard and burned all the gas. Refilled with gas. Went back out. Same issue. Light on when I first try to go outside no wake area, feather throttle for a bit. Drop back to idle. Lights off. And rides rest of the time fine. I went out in the chop and I found it was coming on a little more, did it to me about 3-4 times in the first 10 mins of driving. Then it was off and she ran 7000rpm across the lake.

I’ve read a few threads about similar issues but everyone seems to be stuck in limp mode. Mine seems to run fine for the most part.

You will need to read the trouble codes to find out what is going on. I would suggest the CandooPro code reader. You are going to need one at some point owning a DI.

I know someone who has that system
But I won’t get it there until early next week, I assume I’m putting my ski at great risk now if I’m running it like this? Or is the fact it’s running well once the light goes indication of something less nefarious??

Have an RXDI that did basically the same thing. Long story short it was the aftermarket rectifier. It basically was a “sometimer.” Replaced with OEM.
I figured it out after hooking my candoo pro up to the ski.
If you just can’t wait until you have access to a candoo pro, there is one test u can perform. Connect a volt meter to the battery, start the ski and rev to 5000rpms. The volt meter should read between 13.5 and 14.5vdc. Anything more or less and the rectifier is bad.
I recommend you get the codes read ASAP.

Did this test and ski stayed between 13-14v...

Took out on water today. Light on when I’d hit throttle a bit getting out of harbour but by the time I was in the bay the light was off and the ski ran hard for 1.5hrs in 3-4ft waves without issue besides running low on oil and smoking like a bitch cause I assume the oil is kinda old.

Yep sounds familiar. When you get the engine codes read it will show a history of all the times the maintenance light came on and will tell you exactly what caused it.

Smoking like a bitch has nothing to do with the age of the oil. Are you running the correct oil? Is your oil pump adjusted correctly?

it only started that once the Low Oil came on. I’ve been running premium marine 2-stroke oil. Usually Amsoil but I am guilty of mixing oil with other premium 2-Stroke into the tank. Last one was from the Yamaha dealer

Well after running great the last few times out I decided to pull the spark plugs today, they were pretty black looks like it’s running rich ( explains the smoke)

put new plugs in ( Champion RC12M) I think it was. Fire up ski. No maintenance light, get out of the harbour revs fine then boom lose spark on one cylinder..... so the hunt begins. Lucky I do have a spare coil pack so hopefully that fixes the no spark.

Never had any luck running spark plugs other than OEM/NGK.
Mixing oils can plug your oil filter causing engine failure. Can’t tell you how many engine failures I have seen due to plugged oil filters.

So suggestion would be remove oil and replace with the Amsoil or strictly BRP?
it seemed to be running rich for the look of the plugs which were also the champion plugs. Hopefully get it hooked up tomorrow to candoo and see what’s cracking I got a trip planned next Friday for long weekend so I gotta get her running again ASAP

Fair enough. One of the local guys with e BUDS system is coming here shortly to scan my machine for $45. Will report back. Will also go get NGK plugs and new oil. Drain remaining in tank and reinstall for good luck. I’m kinda skeptical on the oil stuff considering sciences point of view on it but I’ll adhere for sake of this insanely fun super temperamental machine.

Please don’t misunderstand. You use whatever oil you want. I am only making a recommendation based on my experience.
The big problem with oil is two different types get into the oil filter and it congeals and stops up the filter. Whatever brand of oil you use stick with it and don’t mix. I would also recommend changing the filter right now while you are working on it.

I’ll order one now. And I get you. I ran amsoil religiously. But then it became whatever premium was in the gas station for both my skidoo and seadoo. Thankfully the Yamaha doesn’t have to worry about anything ever it seems. But it’s not nearly as fun as this XPDI when she’s riding like a rocket again.

So here’s an update:

guy tries to scan my ski with the buds system. He says it doesn’t seem to be working and all of a sudden my info gauge is dead. Not showing anything. He was connected buds inside by the engine with an orange plug. He said leave it with me, I left it there three days. He didn’t get the info centre working, and he told me he scanned the ski but there was no codes. He said it’s running good and strong. I pick up the skis $88 bill. Take it 3hrs for my trip and don’t even get out of the marina and the ski is on a single cylinder again. I don’t know if there is a maintenance light because my info gauge isn’t working still......
