My buddy was out on his 2003 GTX SC last weekend. He was running around in some slight chop when the ski just died. He noticed he had a loose positive cable on the battery. WHen he reconnected it he had no power when he plugged in the DESS key. No beeps, no display, nothing. He had to get towed in.

Battery is brand new and fully charged. All fuses are good to go (MPEM and the three in the engine bay).

We are at a loss as to where to look next. Did he lose the MPEM?

Suggestions on what to check next?

An easy test to determine a direction is, jump the starter solenoid..

If it cranks as it should, then you have a good battery, good cables, good connections, and a good starter. If it doesn't, then one or more of these is the issue.

Even if the solenoid itself was bad, you should have power to the dash,,,

Check ALL the fuses then. You have power and it is good power. Just not getting to the places it needs to get...

All of the fuses in the front of the MPEM were good. The two 30A fuses in the engine bay near the starter relay were good as well.

Still nothing when the DESS key is installed. No beeps, no power to the dash panel, nothing when the start/stop button pressed. Don't see any connections that may have come loose.

Are there any other fuses that we've missed? Could it be the key mount itself? Could a loose positive cable on the battery burn out the MPEM if it was loose and sparking? I would hope there would be a fuseable link between the battery an the MPEM???

Even if your lanyard was shot, pressing the START button 5 times should activate the MPEM and go into a test/diagnostic mode.

Yes, a lose main lead can damage the MPEM but it isn't common. The fusable link is a diode withing the MPEM itself. Do a search for "Seadoo MPEM Diode" and you will see what I am referring to.

Pressing the START button 5 times does absolutely nothing. Tried it with key on and off post. Also tried hitting the SET button 5 times with no luck. Everything appears to be dead as far as display and controls go. A friend hooked it up to the CanDoo software the other day and it wouldn't even read the MPEM.

Mechanic believes the MPEM is toast. I see eBay has them for $620. How hard is it to install if we decide to do it ourselves? We have a buddy with CanDoo software and he's already ready the boat once before. Would we use up a new license if we used the CanDoo on the new MPEM? Will we have to reprogram keys again?

Not sure what else is involved aside from disconnecting the battery and swapping out the MPEMs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
