2002 XP only runs in 'reserve' mode

I bought a used 02 XP... wouldn't start this spring. after some trouble shooting, the fuel filter was empty. so I cleaned the fuel filter, and switched the knob from 'on' to 'reserve'. Bam, fires right up no problem. I let it idle a bit, then move backed to 'on'. engine dies. filter empty.

Can I remove the seat on this thing? I have the parts manual PDF that shows 2 hoses going into the valve, I know there is only 1 tank / 2 pickups.

What is most likely the problem / how do I fix it?

I had a 98 GTX Ltd since '98... this 02 XP has the same engine, but MAN what a difference... i'm still sore from riding, but what fun!

theres the green slime crap ALL thru the fuel system and carbs, from the fuel lines breaking down. Remove the underneath seat pan, then the bolt securing the shock up top, after yuo've removed the 2-hose clamps. ZFrom there, the seat willpivot up and over the handlebars exposing the center plug, which yyour baffle is located.

Im not sure what you mean. my 1998 GTX with 300+ hrs does not have this problem...

is the baffle where I should look first for the problem?

he is referring to the bluish or greenish slime that the stock gray fuel lines melt into over the years. So if you still have the gray lines, you will most likely need to swap out with black fuel lines.

I am betting your selector switch is a goner. I had similar issues with my 96 XP and messed with the baffle, all new fuel lines, filter, etc, and it still didn't want to run. The selector was on back-order, so a couple weeks later, it shows up in the mail, and I swap it out, problem solved.

It does wierd stuff when it isn't working correctly.

ok, my skis are outside for the summer, it's pouring rain now, but I will check the coloring of the lines when I get a chance.
