I'm looking at buying a second sea doo. I'm a old school two stroke guy and can pretty well do all my own maintenance work on my GSX 787. But I'm considering a 4 stroke. I'm looking at a 02 GTX 4-Tec. What are some problem areas for this craft? Is it that much easier on fuel than the two strokes? That is the only reason I'm looking at a 4 stroke because everyone says they are so much easier on fuel. Any advise would be a big help. The guy is asking 3200, Is this a reasonable price? I'm new to the 4 stroke market.

Hi KrazyKarpt,

Like you, I always had old school seadoos.

Just bought a 2004 4tec SC, it´s a completely different kind of ski.

Better for all your family, and some times worse for you (if you like stunt, etc...).

I believe old school seadoos in cruise speeds are more efficient because they are light and have less engine size.

In the end of the day I believe 4tec suck more gasoline than the old schools, even all technology they have.
But they are more reliable and more "friendly" to use.

Is the price reasonable? That depends. How many hours are on it? Is the service up to date? Any defects?

Things to look for ... Water in the information center ... that part cost over $600.00! Also look at the bottom of the J-pipe where it connects to the exhaust manifold (you will need a mirror) to make sure it doesn't have an exhaust leak. Make sure electical connectors on the MPEM don't have broken locking tabs.

I had a 1995 XP, and I really like my GTX. Sure the XP was a lot of fun, but the GTX is better for the open ocean where I do most of my riding. My GTX is much more economical when it comes to fuel consumption, and my wife likes the stability.

The GTX is fuel injected/computer controlled; you will need a CANDOO scanner and a laptop for certain maintenance tasks.

Lastly, get the RIVA OPAS block off kit! You really don't need those silly vanes!

Thanks mkov608. I will be sure to check all the areas you mentioned. I'm going to look at the ski this weekend. I'll let ya know what happens.

4 stroke vs 2 stroke is not where the better fuel economy comes from. It's fuel injection (most 4 strokes are fuel injected, most 2 strokes are carb and that is where the confusion comes in).

It's a safe bet that any fuel injected jet ski will get better gas mileage than any carbarated jet ski.

3200 sounds like a resonable price (without knowing anything else about the ski - hours, condition, trailer....)

No doubt EFI in general is most efficient.
But I would not say that in general regarding skis carb x skis fuel injected.

Take a carb 717 two seater seadoo (lightsweight) versus any supercharger 4tec or even a gti130, I can bet in cruise speeds or even at the same Wot they will consume less fuel than 4tecs.
Reason is simple: light and half of engine size.

Carbs are not the devil on this case, I think.
