I have a 2001 XP and when going down the lake the other day at full throttle the machine jsut stopped. I could not get it re-started, it would try to crank but did nto have enough battery juice to turn over. Does the ski need the battery once started? I di dcheck the battery and it was pretty low on power.

So once the ski is running it stills needs a battery to run? No alterantor that would charge the battery? I apologize if these a dumb questions, I simply am trying to learn.

Yes, although on these it's called a Magneto. it uses a stator. Mine went out in my '02 XP last year. I got a used one that was crap, then another that didn't look 100%, but worked. Next time I'd buy new ($100vs $300)... I was over 2 weeks w/out my ski in mid summer because I cheaped out.

Anyway;.. step 1. charge battery fully OUT of the ski
2. put battery in ski - read voltage level w/voltmeter (should be 11.6-12.5)
3. hookup hose (not on)
4. start ski
5. turn on water
6. attach voltometer to battery on ski.it should read HIGHER with the ski running (approx 13.8-14.2)

7 shut off water
8 shut off ski

9. So you'r battery isnt' charging:

a. you need a new stator

or

b. you need a new MPEM or aftermarket rectifier

you find this out by testing the startor. The tool to do such is $30-$45

if you have a local dealer, they can test the stator w/said tool in all of 5 minutes, and charge you 1/4 hr labor.

that's what i'd do... which is ... what I did last year.

once I knew my startor was bad, I replaced it, and now everything is peachy... except for that impeller and wear ring I shredded last saturday....

if you'r doing this yourself, BE CAREFUL to not drop the oil pump shaft in the hull.... somehow by the grace of the buildge gods I ended up not seeing this part, it fell in the hull, and when I had everything back together..I FOUND IT... the engine was rebuilt with only 7 hours on it... I would have siezed it in minutes... don't drop / lose that part, and make sure it gets back on there.

You DO NOT have to remove the pipe to do this job. it can be done with a flashlight in your mouth with a loving wife at 11PM in the dark! twice.
