Hey tech-savy 2 stroke PWC mentors - have a post on the premium troubleshooting, but guess seadoosnip is out of the net on vacation for awhile. anyway - replaced fuel lines and rebuilt carb. ski was operating good with the kids on it about 3 wks ago and just quit running. most threads directed me to do this. it turns over now but just sputters and barely fires up for a quick second or two. had a small backfire out of exhaust. questions: where or what coud the first timer carb rebuilder have messed up - followed a great thread by qstorm on carb rebuild !! Mikuni Dual 46I carbs with
new 2.0 seats/needles and orings, gaskets, etc throughout carb. pop off pressure at 22 on mag and 21 on pto. have the lsa set at 1.5 out and hsa all the way in. all per manual.
got alittle messed up and confused on fuel line replacement and need some confirmation. pulse nipple clearly marked so good there. fuel "T" atop the mag carb = is this fuel return or fuel into the pto carb? whats the arrow in (fuel in) and arrow out is where i may be wrong. also heard that when you have oil tank empty for awhile (drained, cleaned and replaced lines and filter while pulling carbs) that it takes a day or two for the sensor to acknowledge a good oil level - since i put back together and now conntect dess lanyard my low oil light is on ??? thanks in advance for any pointers or assistance. thought i did ok for first time pwc back door mechanic but now im alittle reluctant to go forward and second guessing myself.

If the ski was running good after the work was done... then I would say, the carbs are OK.

1) When it quit... was it instant?
2) where you riding it when it happened?
3) What do the spark plugs look like?
4) did you try to use any starter fluid to get it to refire? (it helps if it's flooded)
5) did you check the compression?

Answer those... and we will help figure it out.

Dr Honda - Thanks so much for the quick reply. My carb rebuild and fuel line replacement came after the jetski quit running. I thought best from reading other threads it showed that most likely this was my area fo tocus on first (especially the grey fuel lines and a carb rebuild). Thought maybe you may have had access to my other threads under premium, but sure your time is precious and very limited and cant just cruise all thee threads for replies and historical information.

1) When it quit... was it instant? = Yes from what I was told my daughter was riding it and just went from running good to bogging down and idle only, finally idle only stopped and the wife towed her back with the other ski.
2) where you riding it when it happened? yes.
3) What do the spark plugs look like? old ones were dry, MAG side some black and appeared alittle fouled and PTO side a dark brown when the ski stopped running. brand new right now and gapped to specs as figured best with carb rebuild and was hoping to take out and lake test to set the low/high speed adjusters.
4) did you try to use any starter fluid to get it to refire? (it helps if it's flooded). No i have not tried starter fluid. It turns over and fires but one it does run its very sluggish and rough, vibration = sounds terrible !
5) did you check the compression? re-checked this am. MAG side at 130, other side at 125. when does my compression readings indicate the need for a top end rebuild by the way.

Im not quite sure as the schematic from the manual does not give me enough detail for the fuel lines. Pulse line confident as marked and goes to engine block. The "T" connection atop the MAG carb = is this the fuel return ? Assume the arrow "IN" Is the fuel in. Whats the arrow out = feed the PTO carb ?

Want to go to lake and trailer test for turning over but the backfire and the less than confidence of the fuel lines and now the oil low light on from draining the oil tank and removing while i worked on the carbs has me a little concerned. Think i may take the carbs back off and recheck everything (mainly pop-off) as it was my first time and although i took my time and followed a great thread as a guide i may have boutched something up during re-install.

Thanks again for taking time to read and respond.....Sorry for all the questions throughout reply......

Now Im really bummed out. Re-checked compression this afternoon with my neighbors compression set up (snap on tools guy). Now i get totally differant readings from my set up. MAG side is 125 and PTO side is 60. CRAP! I did it four times just to make sure as was so taken back. Obvious this points to a top end rebuild does it not. Maybe this was my problem all along. Oh well, gotten mechanic savy with the fuel line replacement, carb rebuild and other maintenance to date. Just want to make sure this is the route i should take. Not sure i really want to tackle myself as what special tools do you need for top end rebuild?? Are they fairly easy? Thanks.

Bump, just looking for some feedback on wheteher or not Im on the right track for a full top end rebuild with the compression readings i got. Any suggestions or feedback.

If it's 60psi then topend need to be done as for the job it's easy if you did the carbs and fuel lines already then you can handle a top end on it i replaced mine last season not bad at all on a few hours to tear it apart and a few to reassemble you may need to have the cyl bored so don't order parts till you tear it down to know the condition of the cyl

Understand, thanks for the double feedback, appreciate it. When doing some research last night for top end rebuild kits i found several. I know my engines is a 947 (951) but whats the 951 white, silver and DI with the sizes of 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm equate to ? Pretty confident I have a DI engine and are the sizes the diameter to accomodate if i was going to insert a sleeve ? Is the low compression just from the rings seating inside the cylinder loosely? Looks as if the PTO side was running lean, any ideas on what to look into that got me in this positoin. Carb was pretty clogged on the PTO side - gonna go look at the oil injection lines as i had some issues there i discovered when doing the carb rebuild and fuel line replacement. Thanks again, and onto to a top end rebuild job=print out that portion of the manual next and some more homework before ripping into it.

A DI is a fuel injected two stroke your ski has a carb so it is not a DI and As for why your top end is bad if it was lean that could cause it due to high temp but the only way to kno is to tear it down don't order parts till it all apart I sent my cyl out and they bore matched them to the pistons that they supplied and it was not expensive at all like 400 parts and machine work and shipping

ok, thanks for the confirmation. confused with these engines as have an 03 XP so was thinking same DI engine. looks like this afternoon to open up the top end and do some explatory work. 400 for parts and machine work is a great price i think, as alone some of the prices for the top end kit i was looking at were 300. will look into a shop where i can get some bore work done to match pistons. starting oil injector pump removal for a bench test and maybe replace the small oil injector lines. i had discovered some oil gloob in the main line prior to the filter when i removed for the carb job and thinking i might have an oil blockage in those small lines which may have led to this current low compression / lean condition as well.
