Help! It will not charge batteries. It drains the batteries after hours of use. I was going to buy a rectifier out of econimics, but then was told my boat doesn't have one. If I check the battery and it is around 12V and then I start it it is does not go up, that confirms that it is the charging system right? Is there anything esle I can check, like a fuse, etc. I am hoping it is not the stator. All lights still work, so I assume it can not be the voltage regulator. When the battery is dead, the boat will not run on its own as it does not generate power for the EFI system to operate. I am pretty sure it is not generating it's own power. Any suggestions?

2000 Speedster 240 HP EFI Charging Problem

It definitely is in the charging system, but it could be either the Stator or the regulator.
First make sure to check all the connections and make sure they are tight and clean. If they are good start with checking the stator.
Hook your multimeter up between the two yellow leads. You should get between .25 and .45 ohms. Next put your red test lead to either yellow wire, and your black test lead to a good ground. There must be "NO" continuity. If it fails either of those tests you need a new stator. If it seems OK you need to check the voltage regulator.
This first test on the regulator is a diode test, so it's important to hook the test leads up the way it calls for. Connect your negative lead to either yellow wire, and your positive lead to the thick red wire. You should get between 100 and 400 ohms. Now hook it up the other way, with the positive lead to either of the yellow wires, and your negative lead to the thick red wire. You should get 40,000 to infinity.
The next test just checks for a short. Hook your negative lead to either yellow, and your positive to the case ground. You should get 10,000 to infinity.
