2000 GTX DI not charging battery

So here's my issue.

I've charged my new battery (Yusa lead acid).
It's voltage is about 12.8 after the charge.

The ski starts up fine, I test the voltage and get about 13.8-14.0 at 6000rpms.

I let it sit for a day or two and start it up and I test the voltage again and I looks like I get no charge. About 11.9. Take it on the water and get a 12v low message.

I've run all of the electrical tests per the manual. Used an ohm meter to check the stator too. It checks out fine.

A guy over at greenhaulk said the ohm test isn't accurate and you have to pull the mag cover to see the condition of the stator.

I've replaced the voltage regulator with the OSD aftermarket 4tec. I've also kept the original one in the ski as well to test between the two of them. My original one works and the OSD doesn't.

Do I need a new stator? That's what I'm thinking. But I don't understand the charging of the battery when it's freshly topped off after a charge from a maintainer.

Any suggestions?

Thank all

On any 787 or 951 you really need the test harness to test the stator under a load, the other check you can do is with it running put a voltmeter on the battery and run it, does the voltage go up, does it stop around 14.5 volts, if it doesn't go up while it's running then it's not charging. If it stops before 14.5 volts or goes over 14.5 volts the regulator is suspect.

Someone also said that if the stator isn't working well it could be shorting the voltage regulator.

I just tested at the battery. With both regulators. The original factory one seems to be going above 15 volts. According to the manual it should charge between 13.8-14.2. I also put an inductive ammeter on the positive cable of the battery. I only get about 3 amps.

The OSD one that I bought last year doesn't work. Looks like I need to buy a factory one. I'm disappointed with this other regulator. A lot of guys said that these ones have been working quite well.

Any other items to try out?

The voltage regulators fail constantly. I've had a couple of brand new ones not work right out of the box. It sounds to me like you have 2 bad regulators. I now always keep a known good used 4tec one with old connectors around just for testing purposes.

OEMs are better but I buy both. If I buy aftermarket and it doesn't work, they will exchange. Actually, I've had good luck buying used OEM 4tec ones off ebay.

jhjesse, the parts manual suggests that there's a new part number for the regulator. Do you know if it's the 4tec or do I have to get a 4tec and switch out to the correct plugs like ski-d00 said.

What has been your experience?

Did you use a 4tec one? If so, did you slice on a new set of plugs or use the Packard tool to remove them?

I highly respect you as well as others, such as 68 ragtop, Doowacka and others who own these DI skis.

Thanks guys.

Of my 3 DI's, two of them have OEM and the third has an OSD rectifier. All work well with no problems. The dealer told me that Sea Doo will change a part number whe they change vendors. The last one that I bought at the dealer contained a different part # but was the same actual part.
The OSD rectifier has the correct plug on it already. They take a 4 Tec rectifier and install the correct plugs.

Hope this helps.

Update, got another rectifier from OSD.

Plugged it into the ski. Works great.

I just thought that it was strange to buy one last year and it didn't work right from the start. I didn't have a volt meter at the cabin to test it. My fault.

Anyway, I should probably have one on hand like you guys suggest. I just hate having extra parts laying around wait for it to break.

Thanks for all of your help.
