1999 GTX LTD 951 won't max RPM

Have a '99 GTX Ltd since new, engine failed at 9 years / 300 hrs.

Rebuilt.

Ran great for 1 season + this spring.

Last weekend ran it, won't break 6,000 RPM.

Compression is 135 in one, 140 in the other.

My best guess is the RAVE system. I checked the covers / springs, all seems fine. I will tear it more apart tonight. I wired the RAVE solinoid right to the battery, clicks on / off every time.

It seems to open the rave, because it does jump from 4,000 RPM to 4,500 fairly quickly... but I can never break 6,000 RPM.

It WILL break 6,000 RPM on the trailer no problem. All the way to 7,200 RPM...

What / where should I look next for the issue?!

dont feel bad I seem to have the same problem with my 01 GTX but mine will hit 6450 and thats hit! wont go no mo and I know its not the raves Im in the exhaust looking round at all the rubber hoses and I found one that looks like it has been replaced incorrectly because it has to sharp a bend in it. Changing that out as we speak and gonna give a test ride and see if that helps if not Im on the guess of water regulator somebody told be to follow little hose from regulator to pipe and disconnect it and take for a ride and water should stop flowing after 5500 rpm and if not thats the problem. Hopefully this helps you out

the shop manual say "NOTE: Water flow regulator valves ordered from
the parts channel are also calibrated.
If the maximum engine speed cannot be attained
or if the engine has poor performance, the water
flow regulator valve should be considered in the
troubleshooting of the problem."

Should I order a whole 'new' one for $200, a used one for $75

or should i disassemble it tonight and order only the part I need? Most likely the baffle for $40 something...

Well, I forgot I had a ton of 'spare' parts... I also have a '02 XP... so tonight after work I will swap these from one to the other, and run the GTX, if it works, I'll just order the used one for $75 and put that on the XP... I hope this is it!

I thought 6100 RPM was good. My 99 GTX LTD runs about 54 mph at 6100. You mean I could be going faster. I saw my peak mph for the day was 59 mph, but thought that was a fluke. HMMMMM
 
well

factory, I dont know, this is .5 over in each, and has the platinum stuff, my friend rebuilt it... ran super for all last summer + this spring. I can't blame him for the water regulator failing...

but my XP will hold 7200RPM wide open. this should hold at least 6800 or 7000 from what I remember... 6100 is no where NEAR what it should be... or at least what mine will do...
 
yeah, swap them out, bud. And rpms forthese crafts, are around 68-6950-ish. gtxgsx man, think you got W.R. issues, as well.

As for "used" regulator, think your play'n with fire on it.
 
gsxgtxman, your GTX should have no trouble hitting 65 I have two of them and my red one will hit 65 when its working properly and my blue one holds 62 no problem. Im betting water regulator problems.

well, I will swap them tonight, if that's the problem, then it's solved for the GTX, i'm also putting in a new fuel filter assembly, new plugs tonight.

then I'll order a NEW water reg (at 2x the price), for the XP.... (no point in swapping them back).

well...

I took apart the water regulator on the GTX, I took it off the ski, blew threw the in, then played with the valve and it appeared to function correctly. took it apart, and nothing had a hole or was damaged.

But, I still swapped it with the one from the XP.

I also used brake cleaner and cleaned the rave slider's off, were gunked with baked on oil, but are now cleaner.

Took it for a ride with new plugs + water reg from the XP... SAME THING :(

Will not pass 6,000 RPM. I inspected the pump/wear ring, everything looks good.

My mechanic says about a check valve under the engine?

or a possible air leak in one of the lines?

I ordered a new fuel filter, but before putting it on I wanted to check it out, and open it... I CAN'T OPEN IT... I'm no weak person, but it shouldn't take a sledge hammer to open a fuel filter... I have to call the place that sold it to me today, some biker place since they had it the cheapest. it's a genuine sea-doo part, came in a BRP box and all... looks identical to the one in the ski, but I can't get the white bottom part to come off the black top part...

Also, my ski still won't break 6,000 RPM in the water (on the trailer, no load, it does).
 
did you make sure, where the waterline hooks to pipe, from regulator, was clear, along with the fitting on the waterbox/muffler?
 
Yes

there are 2 hoses, one for water in (thicker) which is obstruction free, and one smaller, black, that goes water out from the regulator to the pipe, i blew in it, and it was also not obstructed...

the fitting from the muffler to the water regulator was also in fine shape...

If the water regulator shuts water OFF at higher RPMS, I could just pull it from the system for a (REALLY) short run? I should get max RPM but less pipe cooling?
 
thats the functioning of it. With rpms increase, less water should be coming out of that line. Inna sense, makes the pipe, act like a turbo/keep the powerband in sweet spot.

Is the little line from regulator, mounted on the top fitting? With it disconnected, you'll have crappy bottom end off idle/mid range.

the hoses are 2 different sizes, so they are hooked up right... I will pull the smaller (output) line while idling on the trailer in the river, and see what happens...
 
you can run it on river, without it hooked to pipe. Thats one way of checking, if w.r. is functioning, correctly.

like I said though, I pulled a working one from my 02 XP, and put it on the GTX, no difference at all. so I'm 99% sure it's not the water reg...

you think it's starved for fuel? I could run it on reserve, which would pull from another hose, right? at least worth a shot!
 
My GTX did the same thing on both "on" and "reserve". It was because of a rubber boot inside the selector loading up. 7/16" hose coupler will work to test

I will give it a shot, what's the easiest way to do this? is there a coupler I can use from somewhere else on it, or what if this is just bad fuel, do I just grab the reserve hose and hook it strait to the engine?
 
I tried everything from clean carbs, check compression, new fuel lines, plugs and tested rectifier. Nothing worked until I bypassed my selector switch and the oem fuel filter.
 
Buy a $3 in line fuel filter from Wallyworld and bypass both the oem fuel filter (could be bad o ring) and the selector. Cheap troubleshooting. It fixed mine!!

Can i get the hoses anywhere?

I have a new fuel filter sitting at home, but when it arrived, I can't get it apart! I can't get the white 'cap' off the black part! I'm not the world's strongest guy, but i wrapped it in a t-shirt and am turning hard as I can (yes, the correct way) and I can't get it apart...!
