I have recently been been giving a 99 gtx and a 99 gtx limited-- They had low hours but were parked uncovered for the last 5 years - I pulled the seat to take a look and it was full of oily water.

At this point I have no idea what I'm getting into and if it's even worth it. I'm will to put a few hundred bucks and some work. Any ideas if it's a project worth taking on?

Don't walk away, Run! My brother had two of those skis, and was waiting for me to get back from an overseas assignment so I could do all the maintenance. One of the skis ran well, but the other had problems. When I started working on it, I noticed oil and water in the hull and the remains of a bearing, pieces of the outer race, inner race, and ball bearings. Those engines are two strokes, but they have a 30w oil reservoir; the oil lubricates the balanced shaft. Look for a dipstick on the right side of the engine (right from the rider's perspective) We didn't know about the balanced shaft oil reservoir. What we found out later was the shaft bearing had failed in the past and it went eccentric and came out the side of the block. That's were the 30w oil in the hull and the bearing parts came from. We learned more when the engine locked up at 7000 RPM, and the crank and balance shaft sprockets seized together.

If the balance shafts are intact, you may be ok. With them sitting for 5 years (more than likely not properly serviced) ... sounds like two money pits to me.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking you're correct, to far gone at this point. When I say oily water, I mean the entire hull is 100% full of rain water. So these engines have been sitting underwater for years.

I was super pumped about a coupe free ski's until I lifted the seat. I'd only be willing to sink about $500 into each so probably not a wise idea to fool with them.

I guess I'll pull the drain plugs and walk away..
