Hi all - need some help with diagnosing a fault.

A bit of history first as sometimes this can be telling!

New carb fitted recently and the ski went like a dream for the first time for a long while as I have always had fuel issues until I replaced the grey fuel pipes.

Fitted an inline fuel filter

Fitted a new starter.

All was well until I stupidly left the bungs out on my last trip, ended up getting towed in as the electrics just shut down.

I did notice the starter motor had worked it's self loose under vibration.

Tried to start in when it was all dried out and it eventually started but refuses to re start since.

The ski gives a double beep when the key is fitted, all the fuses are in tact and the engine turns over freely. I have looked at the earth wire in the bottom of the rear box (Where the HT leads are housed) and it's quite rusty, although I did earth this to the battery using another wire, no change.

My dad reckons the MPEM has blown and also says that he has checked the bridge rectifier and thinks this has strange readings.

I'm up for spending some cash but don't want to start buying expensive parts until I have eliminated all the basic checks.

Has the MPEM died, is there a check that I could get done or do myself or could it be just a dodgy bridge rectifier.

Bit of a read I know, but best to get as many facts out their:confused:

There isn't any good way to test things out, short of opening every connector, and verifying what each wire is.

Now, if your coil says CDI on it... you could connect the Black/red wire from the mag, directly to the white wire of the CDI/coil. It should run. The early MPEM's only tapped the ignition for a ground, and I'm not sure if the CDI was moved from the coil to the MPEM in your year ski. If it doesn't day CDI on it... do not try to run the engine that way.

Also... it's hard to get any real numbers off of what you are calling the "Bridge Rectifier", since that's not what it is. It's a rectifier/regulator unit. So, you can't check it like a set of diodes since there is more in it's circuit.

light test the white wire at coil. If it lights up, need a new coil and plug wires/plugs. No light up, either stator problems or mpem.

I tested for a 'light' at the coil and also at the connector end of the MPEM and there is no illumination which suggest the stator or MPEM, I guess!

I was unable to perform the CDI test as suggested by Dr Honda as I can't get the coil details as they are on the rear of the coil and the nuts are rusted in position!!

Is this test negated by the fact that I have tested the white wire or would still possibly start as suggested?

Is there anything else you or other can suggest?

if the wire didnt light up the tester, then the wire aint get'n a signal, to tell the coil, to fire.

720cc....wires into the mag housing, where stators located, pull flywheel off, and inspect stator....you got a igniting coil and generating coil, on the stator plate. Possible 1 or both, are bad.

Cheers I'll take a look!

Is it possible these coils could of be damaged by water ingress entering into the starter motor housing? The reason I ask is that I know that the Starter Motor wasn't perfectly sealed as the top bolt was missing and leaving the bungs out obviously gave the engine bay a good soaking?
