Anyone with any suggestions as to where the red knob on the top of RAVE valves should be adjusted to on a 1999 GSX RFI 787. I know the manual specs them to be unscrewed until they are even with the valve cover. A Mechanic I spoke with says he sees a lot of them turned all the way in like is recommended for the 951 and he just leaves them that way now if they come in like that.
Thanks

It's really a matter of personal preference, I like mine about 1-1/2 turns in, the raves open at about 4500-5000 rpm.

Thanks LouDoo for the prompt reply. Would you have any insight in to which way the RAVE adjustment affects the power band. Does screwing in the red knob move the power band to a higher range of rpm or lower range of rpm. Thanks

Your Rave valve (Rotax Adjustable Variable Exhaust) It regulates the exhaust flow. When rpm's go up and the pressure in the exhaust ports build up, the exhaust pushes against the spring and the valve slides up making the exhaust opening bigger. So the more the red cap is turned in the tighter the tension on the spring, which in turn will allow the exhaust ports to open at higher rpms.

This is how it is explained in the manual
For a 2-stroke-cycle engine to have high power capacity
at high crankshaft speeds, a high volumetric
or breathing efficiency is required and the fresh
charge losses must be minimized. The result is
achieved by opening the exhaust port early and
utilizing the resonant effects of the tuned exhaust
system to control fresh charge losses.
When an engine of this design is run at a medium
speed, efficiency falls off quickly. The relatively
high exhaust port effectively shortens the useful
power stroke and because the exhaust system is
tuned for maximum power, there is a large increase
of fresh charge losses. As a result, the
torque decreases along with a dramatic increase
of the specific fuel consumption. Higher torque
along with lower fuel consumption can be obtained
at lower engine speeds if the time the exhaust
port is open is shortened.

The rfi and 951 engines have the raves controlled by the mpem, so they need to be set at the manual specified setting, iirc 2 turns in.

On the carb 787, turning the caps in further opens the raves higher in the rev range, pushing the power peak to a higher rpm. The factory recommended settings with the cap flush and exhaust valve 2 turns in gives a broad, smooth power band.

Yes, my RFI raves are hooked up to a 'rave solenoid', which is turn controlled by the mpem, but my red caps appear to be turned all the way in ???..... Ill have to check that.
