1999 gsx limited idle problem

Hello everyone...99 gsx lmtd with the 951 carb engine..just rebuilt the carbs and got it running on the trailer hooked up to water...idles ok at about 3000 rpm and after about 3 min of runnin if you goose the throttle a little it takes a few extra seconds to come back to idle,almost sounds lean..are all 951 motors like that or is it because the jetpump is unloaded?Can a faulty oring on the the fuel filter cause this because it looks alittle unhealthy..Also im gonna assume the fuel selector needs to be cleaned...What is the best way to clean those??:conehead:

You can't tell much when it's running on the trailer my xp does the same thing the true test is a water test take it out for a ride and see how it performs that's the only way

The 951s are worse than the others...been known to run away w/o a air leak. Your prob alright.

I've not had a lot of success cleaning the fuel valve, because the O ring inside is usually broken or deformed.

I would buy a new fuel valve, they're only about $35.00.

Wierd...I've never had an issue with a selector valve.

You should set the idle 200rpm less than the small engines you read about here. Read post 3. Yes, you make the carb settings in the water!

Your accellerator pump nozzles may be clogged, take off the airbox and put your finger right on the end of the nozzle and hit the gas, if none comes out, remove the carbs, take off the small nozzle lines, remove the fitting, and use the hose you took off to place over the accel nozzle INSIDE of the carb. Hold it in place with a pair of pliers and blow air through the opposite way the fuel travels. Blow air through the fitting as well. Put the fitting back on with a hammer and check operation again. If your plugs are wet, the accellerator pump may be dripping.

Rebuilt the carbs and the accel pump is workin fine...Thanks for the quick responses...gotta take it for a test ride What should the idle speed be at on the trailer and in the water? I read in the manual 3000 rpm at idle on the trailer and 1800 rpm in the water. Does this sound right?

Actually 1400-1500 in the water sounds better, at 1800 you're going to have trouble keeping it at no wake speed. 3000 on the trailer sounds about right.

Yup. A 947 will idle perfectly in the water if you set the idle at 27-2800 out of the water.
