1998 sporster 1800 will not start Carb??? help

My name is mike and I am new to the forum I have a 1998 sporster 1800 that has ran perfect untill the last time i cranked it it cranked for a second w the choke on then i went to crank it again and nothing it doesnt seem like it wants to crank as hard as the other motor that one runs fine changed the plugs checked for spark had spark no change do you think I need to rebuild the carb or does it sound like something else to you thanks for any help.

Your thread post is kinda hard to read. The sentences are kinda jumbled but I think I get the jest of your problem.

In your boat, one motor sits next to the battery, the other motor sits on the other side of it.

If your problem is the motor that sits on the opposite side of the motor that sits directly next to the battery, chances are your problem is in your earth/ground wire. I've seen this quite often.

If you look at your electrical system, I believe your battery sits on the right side, Starboard engine. From there, your ground lead runs from the battery to that motor. Then, the Port motor has it's ground wire that attaches to that Starboard motor.

Check your ground between those two motors. Attach a secondary ground from that Port motor, back to the battery for testing purposes.

I've also noticed that a weak battery will cause this. The reason is simple, "line drop". The longer your electrical wires are, the more power is lost from the distance. If your battery is getting old and weak, it'll cause this exact problem.

I suggest anyone with the twin engine models using one battery always start the motor furthest away from the battery first. That way, you'll likely get a good start on the Starboard motor. :cheers:
 
Carb----Fuel issues???

I have allready tried that with the ground wire... the battery is fully charged, that is a good theory but any other suggestions? I am on the way to get a carb rebuild kit ..before I rebuild it is there anything else anyone could think of..... I just had the boat out 2 weeks ago and it ran great plus those carbs are a bear to get to. If it is the carbs any suggestions on the easiest way to get them off.
 
before you tear into the carb I would lean toward what snipe said.
take the plugs out and put a pepsi cap full of premix in there, replace plugs and see if it fires then. if it is not cranking fast enough to fire it is prob more electrical than carb related.
were the plugs wet when you took them out?

These boats are very susceptible to moisture & corrosion. Its hard to guess on visual
inspection of the starter, so We advise you to remove it from the engine, and if after
you examine it you don't see anything wrong, have it load tested. It may just need
dissasembled & cleaned & new brushes to bring it back to health. Bills86e
 
thanks everyone I went to take the carb out and found that the fuel line that ran from the gas tank was dangling there and the brass nipple that goes to the fuel pump was broken so for now i drilled the remaining brass out and rigged up the fuel line and it riuns perfect..BTW any sugestions on where to buy a new fuel pump. Thanks for all the advice.
