1998 Gtx Ltd 12V Low warning

Hey guys, I just installed my carbs back in after being rebuilt, ski started up immediately and sounded good. I am now getting the 12V low warning light. The battery was fully charged and I even tried another battery and I’m getting the same warning light. If it’s the rectifier, mine is built into the MPEM and I didn’t know if there was any workaround other than the external upgrade from osd marine. Someone stated you could depin and install an external rectifier without needing a harness. Is this true? If so, could someone instruct me on how to do so? I have no idea what would need depinned and how it would plug up. Thanks.

You can check if it is the rectifier by doing this with a multimeter
put the multi meter (dc voltage setting) on the battery and you should be above 12vs, start the ski and measure the voltage, it should be in the 12v range maybe low 13v range, rev it up to 5500 RPM, it should read high 13v to about 14.5 volts ish, if it goes over 15V then it is bad, it voltage doesn't go up when start reving, it is bad.

If unsure, post what voltages you get at each stage, we'll help you out.

Thank you, I will give this a try this weekend!

Really late response but I finally got around to it. While ski is not running, it was 12.06, idle was 12.02, and once reving it jumped to 13.5. I ran it on the hose the other day and the light turns off after running a few seconds. As soon as I take the key off and put it back on, the warning comes back until after it runs a few seconds.

I just attempted again and after running 2-3 Seconds, the warning goes away. Thanks for your help by the way!

I’ve had almost the same problem. Finally found the fault. The two earth wires bolted to the front, in my case anyway of the mag cover, well one was corroded and not making contact. Cut the wires back about an inch, soldered two new terminals on and no more low battery warning on dash. Good to go.
Sadly i destroyed a moem finding that problem. Long story.
Good luck.

What do you mean by the two earth wires? And both of these are on the mag cover?

Mine is a gsx ltd, 1998.
There are 2 x black wires, (earth) bolted to one of the bolts holding the front cover, covering the stator at the front of the engine. Left side. One wire was corroded badly. The other almost as bad. This was giving a low battery warning plus a red dash light. Check those.
Ill take a photo but too late here now. Tomorrow morning as night time here.
