When the carbs sit with gas in them they will crumple, I've seen it in almost every old ski I've restored, not torn but hammered looking and wrinkley.
 
That check valve was on the little gray line coming from the accelerator pump, correct? I believe that's like the recharge jet.
 
Yes, that check valve would be necessary for the accelerator pump, else fuel returns to the carb on the accelerator squirt stroke? For the pump to work the inlet and outlet must have a check valve. The outlet valve is usually in the 2 carb nozzles, one each.
