I recently rebuilt the carbs changed the fuel selector replaced the fuel line with black 1/4" automotive non injection fuel hose from my local auto parts store and when trying to start it on the trailer it revs completely fine until 4000 rpms then after that it makes a strange bumping noise and the rpm still goes up to 7000 rpm and when I took it to the lake it does the same thing except any throttle to make it above 4000 rpms makes it die but if I pull the choke when it starts to bog and hold it the thing revs right to 7000 rpms no problem and if I pull the choke to where it almost dies from idle and gun it the ski gets to about 5000 rpms and goes back down to 4000 and the mph gauge says about 15 mph when it's stuck at 4000 any suggestions to check or fixes would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Joesh

sounds like a air leak replace the o-ring in the water separator and I would replace the fuel selector they go bad and leak air

Well I just did a genuine carb rebuild got a new fuel selector and water filter but it still does the same thing and I found something interesting if I run it with the seat on it will rev normally and it will stop revving on 4000 rpm like it's loaded or blocked but if I take the seat off it runs the same but after squeezing the throttle about 3 or 4 times it revs up to around 7000 rpms on the gauge like it normally should except it sounds like it makes a strange noise like its misfiring or one cylinder is running it basically sticks at 4000 rpm and after a few throttle squeezes it revs to 7000 rpm but it sounds like it revs up but it makes a weird misfiring noise like one cylinder is running if I need to I will post a video of it running if you can't understand what I mean it's just very hard to describe

Its probably hitting the rev limiter with the seat off, which at least you are getting it to rev up now.

Rev limiter is gonna sound like that, chop chop chop, ding ding ding lol.

Inspect exhaust system for leaks.

So on the exhaust manifold I saw black stuff around the gaskget so could that be the problem or could it just be the rectifier

Where are you seeing black stuff? Take a pic and post it, there is a little icon on these quick reply windows that is a portrait, click on it and upload pic on your next post. You can do it from your smart phone.

Once you verify whether or not you have an exhaust leak then you can move onto another possible culprit.

That is normally what happens just before the pipe starts to leak. It WILL leak,,, they all pretty much do. Best answer is to pull it, grind them all and weld them..

If it runs well with the seat off, you need to be looking at your intake. Somehow the air isn't getting to the carbs as it should. Or, something in the carbs is slightly off and it gets just a bit more air with the seat off..

Well I cleaned the raves just because I have never done it and with the seat off after 3 squeezes of the throttle due to a bog it ran correctly and it smoked a lot more than it used to I think it was restricting because the rave was stuck open or closed

Well I found a new possible cause I read online that some in-line fuel filters can be too restrictive so I took the inline fuel filter off with the line to the water separator and fuel supply line and what I found might be the source I think because there is a tiny line crack in the filter you can't see by glancing at it and there was gas on the outside of the line that goes into the carb right on the clamp to keep it on the fitting I was thinking it was lean due to this so I got a long strand of fuel line and attached it to the water separator to the fuel intake fitting on the carb I will test it at the lake tomorrow and see what changed if it runs correctly again I believe I've solved my issue and if it still runs the same I will take the back seat off and see if it runs better because an exhaust leak will make a engine run bad and cause it to load up at high rpms thanks for all the help and support means a lot

I just tested it and it ran great it revved and bogged slightly at 5000 rpms and after really jerking the throttle it hit the max rpm around 7000 and got it up to about 50 mph but later it sounded ok but What was happening was it was revving to 7000 still but it was not getting above 42 mph it's not like it lost power it's like the impeller was slipping not cavitation but I'm thinking my fuel issue has been solved thanks for the help

What could be the problem of this speed issue it was breaking in it seemed like but now if I hit the throttle it has no more bog it just hits the max rpm without hitting the top speed any fixed would really help

Thanks, Joesh
