1997 gtx speedometer issues

Hey All, I just got my 1997 gtx in the water for the first time after a complete top end rebuild. It ran awesome! The only issue I had was the Dial speedometer did not work at all. Now the digital speedometer did work a little. It would only go up to about 30 mph. Are there any known issues with these. Does anyone know of a fix. Thank you

On the back of your ski down by the jet pump is a small wheel looking thing-a-jiggy.:rofl: See if it turns freely.

You could spring for a GPS and that will tell speed.

Check the 3 wires coming from the speed sensor. 2 are for the speedo and 1 is for the temp guage. Use a multi meter set to ohm and test 2 wires for resistance. I can't open the manual to give you the 2 wires color codes to check, but just try 2 of them for resistance as you spin the speed sensor wheel at the rear of the seadoo. If you got resistance the sensor is good move on to end of the wire at the guage and check for continuity there. If you got continuity at the plug, the guage must be bad.

Thanks guys. I will check the wires for continuity. The speed sensor wheel does spin freely. It's really not a big deal but I would like everything functional. All in all I'am just suprised that after a complete rebuild onthe motor that I had no issues what so ever. The damn thing flies! I did scoot by a newer year xp. Man I was smiling. I could not have done it without you all.

If this wiring problem just happened after the new install of the rebuild, check all the wire connections in the hull. Maybe one is not quite connected properly and use dielectric grease on the plug connections. It could be something simple like that.

When I got my 99 running, that was froze up. Now my speedo works!!

kustomkarl: Does the speedometer change resistance based on the speed of the wheel? I wasn't sure what you were getting at by just checking resistance. Are you expecting it be open, shorted, varying based on speed?

The resistance varies on the speed of the wheel as it turns faster. So it varies, with no specific amount. No resistance means there is a problem with the sensor.

the speedo works using magnetic inductance where it alternates the voltage between 5.5v and 8.5v every 1/4 turn as the paddle wheel w/magnet in it passes it. it then turns the rate at which it alternates into a speed signal.

to really test the speedometer, you should leave it connected but remove the connector so you have access to the terminals to test for voltage. the purple/yellow wire(put your pos lead) is the speed signal wire and will alternate volatage as you slowly turn the paddle wheel (black wire neg lead).

this is from memory but it is detailed in the seadoo manual.

Thank ski-d00 for the good description. I did find it in the manual, I haven't payed to much attention to the electrical parts just yet.

My sensor appears to be dead. I have voltage on the connector without the sensor plugged in. I also shoved a piece of 30AWG wire in there and closed the connector and got 11.3V, but did not vary at all with the wheel. So my sensor is also dead.

Any idea if the sensor assembly can be taken apart to replace the electronic sensor at a lower cost? I haven't looked at it very closely, but if I can get the case off somehow, the sensor might be replaceable at a very cheap cost. I might try that in a week or two.

OK, Back to my issue. Took the gtx out today for the second time since rebuild. I had mentioned the first time the dial speedo didn't work but the digital worked a little. Today the neddle was bouncing around al over the place. The digital still didn't seem right either. At least now the dial is bouncing around. Any ideas?
