1997 GTX No Spark

The engine truns over freely without spark. The DESS responds with two chirps when connected. All gauges respond as well.

What I have done so far...checked all the grounds and fuses and replaced the coil. With a meter I show voltage to the coil with the battery connected and the DESS key on. Once I hit the stark button the voltage drops off. It seems to be grounding out.


Is this a stator or CDI issue.

In addition, the previous owner said he tried starting with a battery charger. Could he have cooked something?

One thing you should know, when you try to start the motor, the stored power in the battery is bein drained. So, your charging system is going to look like you have a problem because until the motor starts, you have nothing building a charge.

If you have two beeps, then your lanyard is communicating to the MPEM. But, if you are not getting spark at the plugs when the motor is turning over, the first thing I'd do is check the pickup coil at the magneto. When the magneto spins, every 180 degrees the mag turns, the pickup coil breaks contact with a magnet and that's what creates the signal for your mpem to power a spark to the coil. So, if your electrical system sounds like it's working, you need to check your pickup coil to see that it's sending a signal to the mpem. There is a huge chance that this is where your problem is.:cheers:
