Hi,

I have a 1997 GTX with only 61 hours and had bad luck with it last summer, after I bought it from a dealership. To keep the story short I basically rebuild the entire ski. I replaced the engine, rebuild the carbs, replaced the oil pump with a new one, replaced the starter and also the grey fuel lines with black marine fuel lines. The engine compression is still 150 psi on both cylinders, after 10 hours of use with new engine. For more info what happened last year please read the thread "1997 GTX won't start up misfires" in the forum. ( http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?34089-1997-GTX-787-won-t-start-up-misfires )

I de-winterized my ski about two weeks ago and took it twice for about an hour on the lake. I'm still using the gas and BRP synthetic oil from last summer, but I've put some Stabil fuel treatment in after I winterized it in November last year. The ski is running ok but I have a few issues were I need some help.

1.Idle issue
The main issue that I've noticed is when I ride it and go back to idle is that the rpms go down to about 1580 and a few seconds later they go slowly up to 2000-2100 rpm in idle :banghead:? I'm thinking that maybe the carb adjustment is off, low speed screw or idle screw? The throttle cable seems to be attached propely there is maybe 1 or 2mm of play on the throttle, the butterflies on the carbs are fully open when choke is released ? When I mess with the choke so that the idle drops, it stays at 1600 rpm when I release the choke. And my max rpm is only 6500rpm, I remember my old engine used to rev up to 6800rpm, should i mess with the high speed screw or should I run it a few more hours?

2. Speedometer issue
My Speedometer is only working sporadically. When i go fast or make turns it works for a few seconds but then it goes down to 0mph. I took it out last week and checked that little wheel at the rear oft the ski, but it is spinning just fine. I sprayed some WD40 on it but it didn't help. I also checked the wire connection in the engine compartment, but it seems to be fine. I didn't take the backplate off yet, I thought I ask here for some great ideas or suggestions first.

3. No beep tone when lanyard attached.
Most of the times I don't get a beep when I attach the lanyard to the ski, sometimes I hear it but maybe once of 30 times trying. I also don't here anything when I hit the start button for a few times without the lanyard attached. Do I need to replace the speaker, is there a way of testing it for functionality? Loose connection?

This is my first pwc and I bought it last year, I'm not a technician all I know about it did I learn from this great forum.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance

Im almost wondering if theres a little air leak near the carbs? Are they sealed good?
Top RPM? Probably a richer Air Fuel setting. How do your plugs look? Thats the only way you can tell if you can mess around with the settings.

Donno about the speedo.

And who cares about the beep thing. You can test them its just a little 12V speaker. Mine works on and off, depends on its mood. The speaker tested out fine so it must be the MPEM.

It sounds like the carbs low speed screws might need to come out a little, but if it doesnt help then maybe the carb gasket slid out of position when installed or something....slight air leak.

Speedo prob is just a faulty pickup...dont ask me how the go bad, I have no idea. Water gets in them like everything I guess.

Beeper usually starts working after hitting it with a screwdriver handle, or a little brake cleaner.

Thanks for the quick response,

I took the ski out for a little ride today and had still the same issue with the idle. The top rpm is 6500 only and after the ride i've checked the plugs. They are only 3 hrs old and look good, there was gas and a little bit oil on them, they were not dry or too wet but a little black what I think is normal after a ride.

I sealed the carbs good, but I would like to do a test with some starting fluid. I thought if I have a vac. or air leak on my carbs, the engine should pick up if I spray some starting fluid to the carbs. I don't know if it will work, what do you guys think about that?

My speedometer is still only working maybe 5% of the ride. What is underneath the backplate on the bottom were the wheel is? How does the signal from the wheel get to the speedometer?
